{"id":176021,"date":"2023-08-30T14:11:07","date_gmt":"2023-08-30T18:11:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=176021"},"modified":"2023-08-30T16:38:09","modified_gmt":"2023-08-30T20:38:09","slug":"guided-walk-in-pointe-sainte-charles-examines-gentrification-in-neighbourhood","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/guided-walk-in-pointe-sainte-charles-examines-gentrification-in-neighbourhood\/","title":{"rendered":"Guided walk in Pointe-Sainte-Charles examines gentrification in neighbourhood"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CKUT attended a community walk led by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rilpsc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Regroupement Information Logement<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(RIL) to learn about Pointe-Saint-Charles\u2019s history of organizing around housing and the gentrification happening in the borough.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nicholas Harvest of the RIL says that because the Point has the most social housing per capita in Canada, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the neighbourhood has more of a bulwark against rent hikes and housing speculation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cUs in Pointe-Saint-Charles, we know what the solution to the housing crisis is, and it\u2019s social housing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Still, activists say the Point is not immune to the housing crisis hitting Montreal. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Margot Silvestro is a community organizer at the Pointe-Saint-Charles Community Clinic and a co-founder of <\/span><em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/B%C3%A2timent_7_(Montreal)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">B\u00e2timent 7<\/span><\/a><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>.<\/em> She\u2019s seen a lot of change in the 17 years she\u2019s lived in the neighbourhood.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe see a lot of old people from the Point \u2013 former workers, people who were in the Point  a long time \u2013 and they are pushed out, so they just disappear.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cSuddenly you have a new family, middle class, with one dog and one kid, and a Tesla.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Listen to the story below:<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CKUT attended a community walk led by the Regroupement Information Logement (RIL) to learn about Pointe-Saint-Charles\u2019s history of organizing around housing and the gentrification happening in the borough.
