{"id":174999,"date":"2023-08-28T11:55:52","date_gmt":"2023-08-28T15:55:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=174999"},"modified":"2023-08-28T11:55:52","modified_gmt":"2023-08-28T15:55:52","slug":"canadian-museum-of-immigration-welcomes-exhibit-featuring-stories-of-southeast-asian-refugees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/canadian-museum-of-immigration-welcomes-exhibit-featuring-stories-of-southeast-asian-refugees\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadian Museum of Immigration welcomes exhibit featuring stories of Southeast Asian refugees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <em>Hearts of Freedom: Stories of Southeast Asian Refugees<\/em> exhibit was unveiled at the Canadian Museum of Immigration (CMI) at Pier 21 on Tuesday night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>Hearts of Freedom<\/em> looks at the lives of refugees from Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos who risked their lives traveling to Canada during the Vietnam War, Lao Secret War and the Cambodian genocide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">During the opening night, Terry Nguyen, a Vietnamese refugee who traveled to Canada with his family in 1975, spoke about their journey by boat where they were often robbed by pirates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI still remember vividly pirates breaking our drinking water and bathing themselves with our water,\u201d Nguyen says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nguyen was part of the <em>Hearts of Freedom<\/em> interviews that Dr. Stephanie Stobbe, curator of the exhibit and associate professor at Menno Simons College at the University of Winnipeg and her team conducted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Stobbe along with other researchers conducted 170 interviews in five languages coast to coast.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The<em> Hearts of Freedom<\/em> team compiled the interviews to create the exhibit to tour the 10 cities where the interviews were conducted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis project is really important to me, and is very meaningful because my own family came as refugees from Laos. And I came with my family as a child,\u201d Stobbe says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Between 1975 and 1980, 62,000 Southeast Asian refugees resettled in Canada; by 1991, there were 94,255 Vietnamese Canadians, 18,620 Cambodian Canadians and 14,840 Laotian Canadians, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/heartsoffreedom.org\/project-outcomes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hearts of Freedom reports.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The exhibit showcases three panels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe have a panel on escape journeys and refugee camps,\u201d Stobbe says. \u201cAnd as you move along the panels you read about the government policies and sponsors.\u00a0 And then from there, you move to the settlement and integration.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The traveling exhibit will be stationed at the CMI until Dec. 3.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Listen to the story below:<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Hearts of Freedom: Stories of Southeast Asian Refugees exhibit was unveiled at the Canadian Museum of Immigration (CMI) at Pier 21 on Tuesday night.
