But landlords also stand to gain by letting them into their buildings, even if they don\u2019t take a cut of those profits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Zachary Kamel, a freelance journalist who\u2019s been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ricochet.media\/en\/3975\/city-for-sale-airbnb-scam-quadruples-rents-replaces-long-term-tenants-with-ghost-hotels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">reporting on Montreal\u2019s Airbnb network for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ricochet<\/span><\/i><\/a>, tells CKUT about his latest investigation on a practice they\u2019re calling \u201cthe Montreal Shuffle\u201d: a move where landlords evict tenants, jack up rents, and contract out their units to short-term rental operators.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He says that landlords don\u2019t just benefit from the much higher rents these operators are willing to pay \u2013 they can also sell or refinance their buildings for more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While the initial evictions might be illegal, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/montreal\/montreal-eviction-hochelaga-maisonneuve-tourism-rentals-1.6748299\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">they also might be within landlords\u2019 rights<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Either way, they\u2019re often difficult for tenants to fight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Otherwise, Kamel says there isn\u2019t much on the books to prohibit these kinds of arrangements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/montreal\/airbnb-illegal-listings-bogus-registration-numbers-1.6925295#:~:text=Under%20Quebec's%20new%20legislation%2C%20platforms,to%20%24100%2C000%20per%20illegal%20listing.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Quebec has tabled legislation that would levy big fines on platforms like Airbnb if listings are unlicensed.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Currently, however, the site is rife with fake license numbers and the platform is denying responsibility for checking them, despite the new law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\"They have absolutely no plans of enforcing it.\"<\/p>\n<p><strong>Listen to the story below:<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As the housing crisis heats up in Montreal, short-term rental sites like Airbnb have drawn criticism from renters.
