{"id":173079,"date":"2023-08-15T18:17:58","date_gmt":"2023-08-15T22:17:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=173079"},"modified":"2023-08-16T09:38:25","modified_gmt":"2023-08-16T13:38:25","slug":"long-awaited-celebration-of-quinze-aout-in-tantramar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/long-awaited-celebration-of-quinze-aout-in-tantramar\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Long awaited\u2019 celebration recognizes first ever Acadian Day in Tantramar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tears came to a few eyes on Monday afternoon at Fort Beaus\u00e9jour, as the first ever Tantramar celebration of National Acadian Day got underway. \u201cThe feeling I\u2019m getting from the community is that it\u2019s been long awaited,\u201d said Sackville resident Jean Pascal Lavoie. \u201cPeople are very excited to be here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lavoie is an Acadian, and director of the Beaubassin Cultural Society based in the Sackville region. Photo: Erica Butler<\/p><\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Lavoie points out the numerous events in and around Tantramar, including a number happening across the border in Nova Scotia, in Minudie, Parrsboro and Amherst. In fact, a contingent of supporters from the new Cumberland Acadian Society in Amherst were on hand to promote their new society, and an upcoming National Acadian Day event on Thursday in Amherst.<\/p>\n<p>The holiday is sometimes known as \u2018Quinze Ao\u00fbt\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019ll be our very first Acadian festival,\u201d said the society\u2019s vice-president, Michel Gaudet. The event starts at 12:30pm with a parade from Amherst town hall to Victoria Park, and continues through to 6pm with live music, a barbecue, a petting zoo, a magician, caricatures, and and puppet show. \u201cEverybody\u2019s invited,\u201d said Gaudet, \u201cwhether you\u2019re French or English, it does not matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\">\n<p><div id=\"attachment_33843\" style=\"width: 639px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33843\" class=\"wp-image-33843\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chmafm.com\/welcome\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/IMG_2570.jpeg?resize=629%2C546&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"A man standing inside in front of a table of book and items, and a sign reading La Societe Acadienne de Cumberland\" width=\"629\" height=\"546\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-33843\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Michel Gaudet, vice president of Cumberland Acadian Society, with a display at the Tantramar National Acadian Day celebration at Fort Beaus\u00e9jour. Photo: Erica Butler<\/p><\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Cumberland Acadian Society is a new group in the region and has been growing quickly. \u201cHopefully it keeps growing,\u201d said Gaudet, \u201cbecause next year is the Congr\u00e8s Mondial, we\u2019d like to be able to expand it and hopefully include more of our communities into the event.\u201d The Congr\u00e8s Mondial Acadien happens every five years and is next slated for August 2024, based in south west Nova Scotia Acadian communities of Argyle and Clare.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Mayor Greg Martin was in attendance on Monday, happy to see the town host an event in his neck of the woods, and at Fort Beaus\u00e9jour, which he says is a little known gem in the new amalgamated town. The town also served up some ice cream from nearby Truman\u2019s Blueberry Farm.<\/p>\n<p>Tantramar mayor Andrew Black opened up the event on Monday, and said this would likely not be the last time the municipality celebrates \u2018Quinze Ao\u00fbt\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we\u2019ve always tried to honor our Acadian heritage through monuments we\u2019ve developed or things like that in our community,\u201d said Black. \u201cWe\u2019ve raised the Acadian flag for Acadian day.
