{"id":171267,"date":"2023-08-08T11:53:38","date_gmt":"2023-08-08T15:53:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=171267"},"modified":"2023-08-08T14:41:24","modified_gmt":"2023-08-08T18:41:24","slug":"bill-c-18-forces-tech-companies-to-pay-for-canadian-media-content","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/bill-c-18-forces-tech-companies-to-pay-for-canadian-media-content\/","title":{"rendered":"Bill C-18 forces tech companies to pay for Canadian media content"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Editor's Note: Alex Freedman is the Exective Director of the Community Radio Fund of Canada and Ed Zych is the programming director with Kootenay Co-op Radio.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gc.ca\/eng\/csj-sjc\/pl\/charter-charte\/c18_1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bill C-18<\/a> was made into law in June requiring tech companies to compensate Canadian media organizations for hosting their content. <a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2023\/06\/changes-to-news-availability-on-our-platforms-in-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meta<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/intl\/en-ca\/company-news\/outreach-initiatives\/an-update-on-canadas-bill-c-18-and-our-search-and-news-products\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google<\/a> have both rejected this framework and have stated that they are beginning to restrict access to Canadian media content.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/bill-c-18-limits-access-to-local-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pamela Haasen<\/a> of CICK in Smithers interviewed the Executive Director of the Community Radio Fund of Canada Alex Freedman earlier this week to hear his thoughts on the new law.<\/p>\n<p>CJLY spoke with the Editor of the Nelson Star <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nelsonstar.com\/our-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tyler Harper<\/a> for his insight on how C-18 will impact the Star and other media organizations across the country.<\/p>\n<p>\"This is going to be extremely difficult for Canadian media [but] I am a little optimistic,\" Harper says. \"If we can ween Canadian readers off social media as a way of engaging with news, I think we\u2019ll be in the better for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ed Zych, programming director at CJLY in Nelson, also gave his take on how C-18 will affect our station and radio in general.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Listen to the story below:<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Editor&#8217;s Note: Alex Freedman is the Exective Director of the Community Radio Fund of Canada and Ed Zych is the programming director with Kootenay Co-op Radio.
