{"id":170131,"date":"2023-07-29T13:46:22","date_gmt":"2023-07-29T17:46:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=170131"},"modified":"2023-08-01T10:30:05","modified_gmt":"2023-08-01T14:30:05","slug":"mobilising-in-waterloo-to-defend-the-greenbelt-and-stop-the-sprawl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/mobilising-in-waterloo-to-defend-the-greenbelt-and-stop-the-sprawl\/","title":{"rendered":"Mobilizing in Waterloo to defend the Greenbelt and &#8220;Stop the Sprawl&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Premier Dog Ford and the Ontario Conservative party have pushed forward with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/ontario-greenbelt-proposal-to-cut-land-for-homes-1.6643299\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">legislation which will allow housing development<\/a> across swaths of the previously protected land, <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/9694836\/ontario-greenbelt-promise-timeline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">despite previous promises<\/a> to leave the Greenbelt alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Across the province residents have organized against the changes to Greenbelt protections, and in Waterloo Region many groups and individuals have been working to \"Stop the Sprawl\". <\/span>Ahead of the July 29th \u201cRally Against the Big Sprawl\u201d in Waterloo, CKMS News spoke with Kevin Thomason of the Grand River Environmental Network and a number of other social and environmental justice oriented organizations.<\/p>\n<p>Thomason spoke about efforts to mobilize against of the Ontario government's actions and <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">legislation which they he argues will dismantle the rules protecting the Greenbelt from destruction by development (such as with Bill 23) and undermine local democracy (such as with Bill 39).
