{"id":169834,"date":"2023-07-30T12:57:12","date_gmt":"2023-07-30T16:57:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=169834"},"modified":"2023-07-30T12:57:12","modified_gmt":"2023-07-30T16:57:12","slug":"city-of-kingston-collects-feedback-for-nuisance-bylaw","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/city-of-kingston-collects-feedback-for-nuisance-bylaw\/","title":{"rendered":"City of Kingston collects feedback for nuisance bylaw"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The city is currently accepting input from community groups, partner organizations, businesses, and community members on a by-law aimed at \u201c[deterring] certain types of nuisance behaviours.<\/p>\n<p>The decision was made at a city council meeting on June 29, 2022, that city staff would prepare a nuisance by-law to be presented to council. The motion came forward after city staff received numerous reports of safety concerns downtown and in city parks. The motion passed with a vote of 6-5 at the time, with concerns surrounding the timing of the proposal due to encampments being discussed in the same meeting, as well as the possibility of increasing stigma against community members.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don't even think we should endorse the concept at this time,\u201d stated Coun. Peter Stroud. \u201cI think the optics are terrible and I hope that we will vote this down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The City of Kingston does currently have a nuisance party bylaw, but no stand-alone general nuisance by-law.<\/p>\n<p>The draft, now available for review on<a href=\"https:\/\/getinvolved.cityofkingston.ca\/community-standards-by-law\"> Get Involved Kingston<\/a>, includes the following topics:<br \/>\n- Odours<br \/>\n- Construction Materials and Construction Dust<br \/>\n- Idling<br \/>\n- Feeding of Wildlife<br \/>\n- Textile Collection Sites and Flyers<br \/>\n- Safe Use of Public Spaces<br \/>\n- Damage to City Property<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe safety and well-being of our community members and visitors, and a clean and enjoyable environment where everyone feels included, are priorities for the City of Kingston,\u201d says Andrew Reeson, Senior Legal Counsel. \u201cThe vision of the Community Standards By-Law is for community members to continue working together to create a livable community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Feedback will be used by staff to refine the by-law so it \u201cmeets the needs of community members\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Community members can review and comment on the draft Community Standards By-Law until Aug. 18 at <a href=\"https:\/\/getinvolved.cityofkingston.ca\/community-standards-by-law\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Get Involved Kingston<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Listen to the story below:<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The city is currently accepting input from community groups, partner organizations, businesses, and community members on a by-law aimed at \u201c[deterring] certain types of nuisance behaviours.
