{"id":168214,"date":"2023-07-19T18:53:49","date_gmt":"2023-07-19T22:53:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=168214"},"modified":"2023-07-19T18:53:49","modified_gmt":"2023-07-19T22:53:49","slug":"ubc-employs-new-drug-testing-technology-at-shambhala-music-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/ubc-employs-new-drug-testing-technology-at-shambhala-music-festival\/","title":{"rendered":"UBC employs new drug testing technology at Shambhala Music Festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The University of British Columbia has teamed up with Shambhala Music Festival to test out new technology that they are saying could be the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.ubc.ca\/2023\/07\/18\/the-future-of-drug-testing-at-festivals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">future of drug testing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This technology improves upon other portable drug testing methods available today, according to UBC, as current methods \u201crequire technicians and can\u2019t detect more than five compounds in a sample at a time or specify the levels of any substance below five per cent,\u201d according to UBC.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Jason Hein, leader of the project, stated, \u201chighly potent substances like carfentanil can be lethal in small amounts, so it\u2019s important to know how much of it is present in a drug. Providing anonymous, low-barrier drug checking services could help save people\u2019s lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shambhalamusicfestival.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shambhala Music Festival<\/a>, located in Salmo, BC is an annual electronic music festival known for its harm reduction services as well as being a gathering place for recreational drug users.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Jason Hein joined CJLY to discuss this technology and its use at the Shambhala Music Festival.
