{"id":167225,"date":"2023-07-24T08:25:25","date_gmt":"2023-07-24T12:25:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=167225"},"modified":"2023-07-24T08:25:25","modified_gmt":"2023-07-24T12:25:25","slug":"natural-resources-education-centre-closes-doors-after-30-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/natural-resources-education-centre-closes-doors-after-30-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Natural Resources Education Centre closes doors after 30 years\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"flex items-center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/novascotia.ca\/natr\/education\/nrec\/\">The Natural Resources Education Centre<\/a> (NREC) in Middle Musquodoboit will be closing at the end of August after 30 years.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"content mt4 _content_351449227\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The centre will be closing to improve workforce collaboration and efficiencies and to provide a less isolated work environment for staff, according to Sandra Johnston, manager of outreach and education for the Government of Nova Scotia.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The NREC offered curriculum-based educational programs that aimed to help instill a sense of responsibility and sustainable development of natural resources for those who visited. They provided these educational programs for schools and groups of all ages and grade levels for just over 30 years.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Although the centre is closing, the outreach programs for forestry, wildlife, insects and other programs offered at the NREC will still be available.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThis change will allow staff to focus their time 100 per cent on outreach programs,\u201d Johnston says.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">There will be no staff layoffs Johnston adds, \u201cwhat we will be doing is moving our expertise to where the people are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The outreach programs will be available at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wildlifepark.novascotia.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shubenacadie Wildlife Park<\/a>\u00a0throughout the trails, similar to what was available at the NREC.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The centre was also within 30km of a similar centre, \u201cso this is creating efficiencies within government as well as it\u2019s not a complete loss to the community,\u201d Johnston says.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0The Department of Natural Resources and Renewables will still have the Middle Musquodoboit District Office that will be maintaining the Nature Learning Playspace located behind the NREC that will still be available to the public and students at Musquodoboit Valley Education Centre.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Listen to the story below:<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Natural Resources Education Centre (NREC) in Middle Musquodoboit will be closing at the end of August after 30 years.
