{"id":159402,"date":"2023-06-09T09:26:27","date_gmt":"2023-06-09T13:26:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=159402"},"modified":"2023-06-13T10:29:05","modified_gmt":"2023-06-13T14:29:05","slug":"new-pilot-project-in-cobourg-to-reduce-speeding-at-school-crossing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/new-pilot-project-in-cobourg-to-reduce-speeding-at-school-crossing\/","title":{"rendered":"New pilot project in Cobourg to reduce speeding at school crossing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Town of Cobourg is trying out a new pilot project at a local elementary school to discourage speeding and to keeping guards and students safe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are a number of busy crossings, including at D\u2019Arcy and Elgin streets, which requires two guards, on King Street East around Cobourg Collegiate Institute and C.R. Gummow Public School and on Burnham Street where there are two elementary schools. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Renee Champagne, from the Town of Cobourg\u2019s engineering department, said speeding has been identified in the latter\u2019s area and the town is launching a pilot project in front of Burnham Public School. Notre Dame Elementary School is also nearby.<\/span><\/p>\n<!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('audio');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-159402-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/ReneeChampagne-clip1.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/ReneeChampagne-clip1.mp3\">https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/ReneeChampagne-clip1.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Champagne reminds motorists to stop when a crossing guard signals to do so, as it\u2019s the law, and to also check for students crossing before turning at intersections. Vehicles should remain stopped until students and the guard have cleared the crossing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Drivers who don\u2019t follow rules for stopping requirements are subject to a substantial fine and losing three demerit points, Champagne said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cOur crossing guards report issues regarding speeding or any other issues that are occurring at their crossing to myself and we work with Cobourg Police and Cobourg Bylaw Enforcement to direct patrols where necessary in locations that guards are reporting speeding, fail to stop and parking in no-parking areas,\u201d Champagne said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cobourg currently has eight part-time seasonal guards and two spares. The town will be looking to recruit more spares for September.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">School Crossing Guard Appreciation Week ran June 5-9.
