{"id":154657,"date":"2023-05-23T19:28:14","date_gmt":"2023-05-23T23:28:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=154657"},"modified":"2023-05-23T19:28:14","modified_gmt":"2023-05-23T23:28:14","slug":"local-outdoor-educators-group-brings-anishinaabe-learning-to-world-migratory-bird-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/local-outdoor-educators-group-brings-anishinaabe-learning-to-world-migratory-bird-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Local outdoor educators group brings Anishinaabe learning to World Migratory Bird Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Before sunrise on May 13, nearly 60 bird enthusiasts gathered at Kawartha Land Trust\u2019s Ballyduff Trails in Pontypool, Kawartha Lakes to celebrate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldmigratorybirdday.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Migratory Bird Day<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The day\u2019s celebrations and events were led by Creator\u2019s Garden \u2013 Birds, a local group consisting of Andr\u00e9s Jim\u00e9nez Monge, Junaid Shahzad Khan and founder of Creator\u2019s Garden Joseph Pitawanakwat.<\/p>\n<p>The day began with a Dawn Chorus: an event for attendants to listen to bird calls and songs during the sunrise. The Dawn Chorus was followed by three guided bird walks throughout the day. All of the events were led by the members of Creator\u2019s Garden \u2013 Birds who brought an Anishinaabe perspective to this international celebration.<\/p>\n<p>Creator\u2019s Garden \u2013 Birds uses both western science and Anishinaabe knowledge in their education. Their project is to gather the Anishinaabemowin names for as many local birds as possible, which is not a straightforward task.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of these names have been collected through Joe\u2019s work for over a decade, in all kinds of Indigenous communities across Ontario, and, in fact, North America,\u201d said Shahzad Khan.<\/p>\n<p>Shahzad Khan\u00a0says that they have collected 170 Anishinaabemowin bird names so far, and still have \u201cmaybe 230 species that [they] have to figure out homes for, or discover names for, or rediscover names for, that have been lost due to colonization over the last few hundred years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To learn more about Kawartha Land Trust, visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/kawarthalandtrust.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>.
