{"id":154299,"date":"2023-05-17T12:49:43","date_gmt":"2023-05-17T16:49:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=154299"},"modified":"2023-06-23T12:50:46","modified_gmt":"2023-06-23T16:50:46","slug":"the-big-give-in-port-hope-returns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/the-big-give-in-port-hope-returns\/","title":{"rendered":"The Big Give in Port Hope returns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Big Give Port Hope is continuing to bounce back following the COVID-19 pandemic. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following a hiatus in 2020-2021, The Big Give Port Hope returned last year with an estimated 500 people turning out to Calvary Pentecostal Church for the free yard sale. The Big Give Port Hope is returning next month with similar fundraiser events happening across the country.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The event launched in 2018 <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when a group of local churches collaborated on a community giving event, according to Sharon Broomer, one of the organizers of the event at Calvary Pentecostal Church. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following year, they joined \"<a href=\"https:\/\/thebiggive.ca\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Big Give<\/a>,\" a national movement across Canada that holds charity events on the first Saturday in June.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe were just so thankful to be able to do that for our community,\u201d Broomer said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year\u2019s event on June 3 will take place from 9 a.m. until noon at the Calvary church at 401 Croft Street.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organizers are in the process of accepting donations of clothing for all ages, household items, children\u2019s toys, small furniture items and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donations can be dropped off at the church Wednesday and Thursday of this week and next, from 5 to 7 p.m. and on Saturday, May 27 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any leftover items following the yard sale are donated to area charities, including thrift stores.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Broomer said last year\u2019s event was quite humbling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur society isn\u2019t one that really understands what free is - we are always afraid that there\u2019s a catch, but there is no catch to this day. Everything is free,\u201d she said. \u201cWhatever has been donated, we give back. We have businesses that have come alongside and offered food that we can donate back so we have a little refreshment table there so everything that is given to us is given back and the people are overwhelmed by the fact that it\u2019s free.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are no restrictions to how much people can take, but there are procedures in place to ensure the line keeps moving and everyone has an opportunity to browse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe do encourage people to take what they need\u2026basically it\u2019s what they can carry.
