Photo by Louis Bockner.<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>The Misty Isles<\/h2>\n<p>Jonas was hired to serve as captain of the 70\u2019 foot ketch\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluewateradventures.ca\/onboard-the-vessels\/island-odyssey.html\">\u201cIsland Odyssey\u201d<\/a>, but his name is associated with another vessel here on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/cortes-island\/\">Cortes Island<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He and his wife,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/amy-bockner\/\">Amy Bockner<\/a>\u00a0purchased the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/misty-isles\/\">\u201cMisty Isles\u201d\u00a0<\/a>last year, but he was captain of another vessel most of that summer. Photo by Jonas Fineman.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Small Ship Tourism Operators Association<\/h2>\n<p>The \u201cMisty Isles\u201d wasn\u2019t the only boat affected by COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluewateradventures.ca\/about\/our-crew.html\">Randy Burke<\/a>, Fineman\u2019s employer for close to nine years, is in a select association of eco-captains that take visitors to remote destinations between Northern Vancouver Island and Haida Gwaii.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat group of operators had no season this year. Photo by Jonas Fineman.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Scope of the beach clean-up expedition<\/h2>\n<p>There were two components to the project.<\/p>\n<p>Between 75 and 100 First Nations personal from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/klemtu.com\/\">Klemtu<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.heiltsuknation.ca\/\">Bella Bella<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcafn.ca\/first-nations-bc\/north-coast\/gitgaat-first-nation\">Hartley Bay<\/a>\u00a0cleaned up shorelines close to their villages.<\/p>\n<p>The crews of nine eco-tourism vessels focused on 1,000 kilometres\u00a0 of shoreline \u201caround 100 small islands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fineman mentions several of the boats in the podcast above.\u00a0 The sailboats\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluewateradventures.ca\/schedule-and-pricing.html\">\u201cIsland Odyssey\u201d and \u201cIsland Roamer\u201d<\/a>\u00a0belong to Burke\u2019s company,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluewateradventures.ca\/\">Blue Water Adventures<\/a>, from North Vancouver.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mapleleafadventures.com\/\">Maple Leaf Adventures<\/a>\u00a0contributed the converted tug \u201cSwell\u201d and catamaran \u201cCascadia.\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/outershores.ca\/our-people\/expedition-crew\/russell-markel\/\">Russel Markel<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/outershores.ca\/our-people\/expedition-crew\/\">\u201cPassing Cloud\u201d<\/a>\u00a0hails from Cowichan Bay. Ross Campbell\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mothershipadventures.com\/index.htm\">\u201cColumbia III\u201d<\/a>\u00a0is based on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/sonora-island\/\">Sonora Island<\/a>. There were also boats from West Vancouver and Mill Bay.<\/p>\n<p>They were assisted by a helicopter, and a barge from the Heiltsuk community in Bella Bella.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst boots on the ground were in mid August and our last day at work was September 26th,\u201d says Fineman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was 45 days of hard work and a lot of complexities. Photo by Eddy Savage.<\/p><\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>A crewman\u2019s workday<\/h2>\n<p>Crews normally worked from dawn until dusk.<\/p>\n<p>The larger vessels served as motherships and zodiacs transported crews to the shore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe crews on the shore were out for the duration of the day. Photo by Jonas Fineman.<\/p><\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>A memorable evening<\/h2>\n<p>One of Fineman\u2019s most memorable evenings took place towards late\u00a0 September, when they were working down by McInnes Island.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had worked a full day with beautiful weather. We had covered a lot of shoreline. I think we had probably up to 100 lift bags leave the beach and go out to the barge \u2026 There were 4-5 boats at the southern end of the island,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt got dark. The helicopter landed on the barge for the night and we all decided we were going to keep working. So headlights went on. It was a beautifully warm, totally still night. The seascape really facilitated this, but I think we ended up reparceling up to twenty of these large lift bags. These can be up to the size of a Volkswagen bug, but we rolled them into our\u00a0 little zodiacs \u2013 in the dark \u2013 and then took them over to \u2026 the \u2018Cascadia.\u2019 It is a 125 plus foot power catamaran, like a little cruise ship. They have a really big deck crane on the back deck.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe owner and operator, Kevin Smith, said \u2018Alright, if you guys are going to work into the dark, we\u2019re going to hang out here by the lighthouse. You just bring the garbage to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo suddenly it\u2019s 10 at night, the moon\u2019s coming up and this little fleet of rubber boats with giant bags of garbage, and headlamps on, is coming alongside this massive luxury yacht. This is not something you normally see in a season. Photo by Jonas Fineman.<\/p><\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThere is always something to do on a boat,\u201dsaid Fineman. \u201cyou are always looking to the next day, you\u2019re looking at the weather \u2026 you\u2019re assessing the crew. Are they getting enough to eat? Are they happy?\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>End of the season<\/h2>\n<p>The weather was turning and they had 18 hours to sail 130 miles, when the expedition finally ended.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe moved down to Calvert Island and made it across Queen Charlotte Sound in about 14 hours. By the time we got into\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/port-mcneill\/\">Port McNeill<\/a>, the weather was really nice. The next morning it was horrible. Photo by Jonas Fineman.<\/p><\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Going forward<\/h2>\n<p>He and his colleagues felt a need to spread the word about what they accomplished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe knew from the outset that branding had to be a big part of this, in order to spread the word. Otherwise it would be a barely visible effort out in the bush, by people who mostly live in the bush.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If a campaign like this can be carried out in remote islands, why not more settled areas?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImagine if we could get each district, or municipality sponsoring at least an annual clean-up of local shorelines? If you start tethering a lot of moves like that together, then you are getting somewhere cleaning up the coast and not just cleaning up the beach where you live, or cleaning up the beach in front of Tofino, or in front of Kitsilano. Garbage doesn\u2019t care where you live, it\u2019s everywhere. We need to look at it that way and take it seriously,\u201d said Fineman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have been inspired to start promoting things around Cortes and the Discovery Islands, with the Misty Isles.
