{"id":153404,"date":"2023-05-11T09:46:07","date_gmt":"2023-05-11T13:46:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=153404"},"modified":"2023-05-15T09:46:55","modified_gmt":"2023-05-15T13:46:55","slug":"period-promise-northumberland-aims-to-support-those-in-need","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/period-promise-northumberland-aims-to-support-those-in-need\/","title":{"rendered":"Period Promise Northumberland aims to support those in need"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Canadian government announced yesterday that free menstrual products will be\u00a0available to workers in federally regulated workplaces by year's end.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But locally, since 2020, Northumberland United Way's Period Promise program, supported by Thrive Northumberland, has helped those in need by distributing over 30,000 menstrual hygiene products to individuals, families and non-profit agencies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In fact, the 2023 Period Promise Northumberland campaign began May 1 and is continuing through the rest of the month. The United Way\u2019s Chelsea Rankin said local residents are encouraged to donate menstrual hygiene products or make a financial donation to keep the program growing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe community is so generous and we are so thankful for their support,\u201d said Rankin. \u201cThis is a really important cause because periods are just a fact of life, but if you\u2019re living in poverty or vulnerable in other ways, access to necessary menstrual products can be challenging so we are very thankful for all of our drop off locations and everyone who donates.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Donations can be dropped off in Cobourg at United Way office, Cobourg Public Library, Squishy Goose, Poplars Practitioners, David\u2019s No Frills, Nourish Boutique Spa and Starbucks; and in Port Hope at the Salvation Army, Chamber of Commerce; Colborne at the Lofty Butter Company and Brighton at RE\/MAX Quinte.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rankin said the federal announcement is welcome and one step closer to building healthy communities and improving the well-being for so many people, but added that any local business can pledge support for Period Promise Northumberland anytime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt doesn\u2019t just have to be federal buildings,\u201d she remarked. \u201cIf you\u2019re a business and want to provide products for your clients or for your patrons that come into your business, you can sign our agreement and commit to offering products for free in your washrooms.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Businesses can pledge their support at Northumberland United Way\u2019s website <a href=\"http:\/\/mynuw.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mynuw.org<\/a> or contact the Rankin at crankin@nuw.unitedway.ca.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Click to hear the full interview with Chelsea Rankin:<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Canadian government announced yesterday that free menstrual products will be\u00a0available to workers in federally regulated workplaces by year&#8217;s end.\u00a0 But locally, since 2020, Northumberland United Way&#8217;s Period Promise program, supported by Thrive Northumberland, has helped those in need by distributing over 30,000 menstrual hygiene products to individuals, families and non-profit agencies.
