Not only are two local authors up for book awards right now, but today also marks the beginning of the 24th annual Frye Festival, the Moncton-based, bilingual literary festival which brings ten days of literary events to the region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really exciting news,\u201d says Pickle, of two local nominations for New Brunswick Book Awards.<\/p>\n<p>Jon Claytor is up for a Writers\u2019 Federation of New Brunswick Nonfiction Award for <em>Take the Long Way Home<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/conundrumpress.com\/product\/the-gift-copy-e\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">published by Conundrum Press<\/a>. The graphic novel is a \u201cnonfiction account of some of his travels and his struggles with some of his demons,\u201d says Pickle.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/jon_claytor_art\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Claytor is a painter, graphic artist,<\/a> father of five and longtime on-and-off Sackvillian. He\u2019s one of the founders of Sappyfest and of the Thunder and Lightning Pub that once graced Bridge Street.<\/p>\n<p>Another local, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reluctantm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Meghan Rose Allen,<\/a> is up for the Mrs. Dunsters Award for Fiction for <em>The Summer the School Burned Down<\/em>, a collection of fifteen short stories.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re still waiting for it because it\u2019s independently published,\u201d says Pickle, \u201cbut we\u2019re eagerly awaiting getting it in the store.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Allen is a mathematician and writer whose first novel <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dcbyoungreaders.com\/enid-strange\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Enid Strange<\/a><\/em> was also nominated for an NB Book Award in 2019. Her new collection of short stories is also up for an <a href=\"https:\/\/atlanticbookawards.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Atlantic Book Award<\/a> this year.<\/p>\n<h2>Frye Festival brings ten days of literary arts events<\/h2>\n<p>The Frye Festival has been going strong for 24 years, and for 18 of those years Tidewater Books has service as the English bookseller for the festival.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a ton of work, but we look forward to it every year,\u201d says Pickle. \u201cWe run around the city with books and we\u2019re at all the author events. Friday night at 6pm he\u2019ll participate in the opening of <a href=\"https:\/\/events.frye.ca\/sites\/frye\/en\/frye-festival-24th-edition\/schedule\/14\/3%20%20%C3%89pistola%20Exhibit%20Opening%20(BIL)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00c9pistola<\/a>, an ongoing exhibition of a \u201ccorrespondence project\u201d between illustrators and writers at the IMAGO Artist-Run Printmaking studio. <a href=\"https:\/\/events.frye.ca\/sites\/frye\/en\/frye-festival-24th-edition\/schedule\/107\/15%20%20Tea%20Time%20(BIL)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tea Time on Sunday afternoon<\/a> features Claytor along with authors M\u00e9likah Abdelmoumen, Charlotte Biron, Lucile de Peslo\u00fcan, and Dimitri Nasrallah. And then on Monday April 24 at 8 p.m, he\u2019s part of <a href=\"https:\/\/events.frye.ca\/sites\/frye\/en\/frye-festival-24th-edition\/schedule\/73\/19%20%20Archiving%20in%20Motion%20(EN)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Archiving In Motion<\/a>\u00a0with fellow author David Bradford.<\/p>\n<p>Thaddeus Holownia\u2019s latest book is part of the festivities as well. His collaboration with Harry Thurston, Icarus Falling, is being launched by <a href=\"https:\/\/events.frye.ca\/sites\/frye\/en\/frye-festival-24th-edition\/schedule\/34\/23%20%20Launch:%20Goose%20Lane%20+%20Friends%20(EN)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Goose Lane Editions Wednesday at 5:30 p.m<\/a>. Then on Saturday, April 29 at 7 p.m., Mt A English professor Dr. Andrea Beverly will host writer Joshua Whitehead in the <a href=\"https:\/\/events.frye.ca\/sites\/frye\/en\/frye-festival-24th-edition\/schedule\/113\/35%20%20Maillet-Frye%20Lecture:%20On%20Bodies%20of%20Writing%20(EN)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maillet Frye lecture, On Bodies of Writing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>All of those events take place at the Aberdeen Cultural Centre in Moncton, as does one of Pickle\u2019s favourite events, the Frye Jam.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s one of their premiere events,\u201d says Pickle.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/events.frye.ca\/sites\/frye\/en\/frye-festival-24th-edition\/schedule\/6\/28%20%20Frye%20Jam%20(BIL)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Frye Jam<\/a> on Friday April 28 features six authors accompanied by musicians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach presentation is slightly different, but they\u2019re all really energetic and fun,\u201d says Pickle.<\/p>\n<p>The Frye is also coming to Sackville this year. On April 29 children\u2019s picture book author <a href=\"https:\/\/events.frye.ca\/sites\/frye\/en\/frye-festival-24th-edition\/schedule\/130\/34%20%20Boobies%20(EN)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nancy Vo will be at the Sackville Public Library<\/a> with her book, Boobies.<\/p>\n<p>You can find Frye program booklets at Tidewater Books in Sackville, and more information online at <a href=\"https:\/\/events.frye.ca\/sites\/frye\/en\/frye-festival-24th-edition\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Frye.ca<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Tidewater celebrates Canadian Independent Bookstore Day April 29<\/h2>\n<p>While Frye festivities are in full swing next weekend, Tidewater will also be celebrating<a href=\"https:\/\/cibabooks.ca\/CIBD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Canadian Independent Bookstore Day on April 29<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Pickle says Tidewater is only one of two independent bookstores in the New Brunswick English market, alongside Westminster Books in Fredericton. \u201cThere has not been another independent bookstore in New Brunswick in over a decade since the last one closed,\u201d says Pickle.<\/p>\n<p>To celebrate the day, Pickle says Tidewater will feature draws for swag from publishers, and double loyalty points for all shoppers. People can also use their receipts to enter draws with the Canadian Independent Booksellers Association for literary shopping sprees at their local store.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt should be a lot of fun,\u201d says Pickle. \u201cWe usually get lots of people in, lots of giveaways for kids, that sort of thing.
