{"id":149752,"date":"2023-04-21T14:06:44","date_gmt":"2023-04-21T18:06:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=149752"},"modified":"2023-04-21T16:11:07","modified_gmt":"2023-04-21T20:11:07","slug":"cab-cowansville-president-reflects-on-the-importance-of-volunteerism-to-highlight-national-volunteer-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/cab-cowansville-president-reflects-on-the-importance-of-volunteerism-to-highlight-national-volunteer-week\/","title":{"rendered":"CAB Cowansville president reflects on importance of volunteerism to highlight National Volunteer Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">Community groups, organizations, institutions, and other bodies across Canada are celebrating the volunteers that are integral to helping them carry out the work in their communities in honour of National Volunteer Week April 16 to April 22.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Volunteer Canada, a charity that provides national leadership and expertise on volunteerism to increase volunteer participation, has made this year\u2019s theme \u201cVolunteering Weaves Us Together.\u201d According to the Volunteer Canada <a href=\"https:\/\/volunteer.ca\/nvw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">website<\/span><\/a>, the theme is meant to symbolize the important role that volunteering has in keeping communities strong and vibrant through collective action.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In recognition of its volunteers, the Centre d\u2019action b\u00e9n\u00e9vole de Cowansville (CAB Cowansville) \u2014 a non-profit organization that encourages active volunteerism and provides services such as the Cowansville food bank, medical appointment transport, income tax services, and more \u2014 held a special event on its grounds yesterday afternoon.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Offering sugar on snow, a prize draw, live music, and good company, CIDI had the chance to attend the event to chat with CAB Cowansville president Dora Lewis about her experience volunteering with the organization and the importance of getting involved in our communities.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cIt started about four years ago. My aunt needed help, she was in an apartment living alone, just for house cleaning and these kinds of things. This was a service that the CAB could offer her at the time and she had what we call \u2018friendly visits.\u2019 The friendly visits is a group of volunteers that are able to go to these people\u2019s places just to spend an afternoon with them,\u201d said Lewis. \u201c(\u2026) When I finally retired and was looking for something to do, I appreciated the fact that service was available to a family member.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Lewis knocked on CAB Cowansville\u2019s doors and she hasn\u2019t looked back sense.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cNow, I\u2019m president and that means several meetings a week because we have a lot of fantastic projects, a lot of needs that have grown because of Covid, and people getting older and needing more services,\u201d she mentioned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">CAB Cowansville has about 50 active volunteers, estimates Lewis, and it\u2019s are always looking to recruit more.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cFor me, being from this area all my life, I just feel that to be able to help, to be able to give back to people that could be our neighbour, that could be someone that I went to school with, it could be anyone living down the street.
