On October 8th,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bc.rcmp-grc.gc.ca\/ViewPage.action?siteNodeId=2087&amp;languageId=1&amp;contentId=66332\">a homeless shelter in the forest behind the Vineyard Christian Fellowship Church<\/a>, in Campbell River, caught fire. The blaze started in the structure\u2019s homemade fireplace. Neither of the two occupants were injured, but RCMP Cst. Maury Tyre said the fire easily have spread to nearby buildings. The day before this, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.campbellrivermirror.com\/news\/eviction-notice-expected-for-quinsam-encampment\/\">Campbell River Mirror<\/a>\u00a0reported that the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/campbell-rivers-homeless-camp\/\">homeless encampment at Quinsam road<\/a>\u00a0will soon be served with a notice to vacate.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Police Reports<\/h2>\n<p>\u201c \u2026 There have been reports of domestic assaults out there; we\u2019ve found stolen property out there; we\u2019ve found kids that are listed as missing intoxicated out there. A 20-year-old homeless male was set on fire as he slept underneath the highway bridge. He \u201cmanaged to shed his burning clothing and made his way to the parking lot for help.\u201d The man was treated for \u201csevere burns to his back\u201d and, when he returned to his sleeping place, found \u201csome of his possessions had been removed.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Residents of Quinsam Road Camp<\/h2>\n<p>The people camping out are probably the most impoverished members of Campbell River\u2019s homeless population, which numbers between 80 and 100.<\/p>\n<p>In a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/the-definition-of-homelessness-in-our-area\/\">recent interview<\/a>\u00a0with Cortes Currents,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/sue-moen\/\">Sue Moen<\/a>\u00a0from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/campbell-river-and-district-coalition-to-end-homelessness\/\">Campbell River Coalition to end homelessness<\/a>\u00a0explained that, according BC Housing, homeless people \u201c \u2026 are precariously housed, or couch surfing, or aren\u2019t paying rent directly to a landlord. They may be sharing a room, but their name isn\u2019t on the rental agreement. They don\u2019t know if they\u2019ll have housing for the next thirty days \u2026 Also, there are a lot of people who are living in vehicles, RVs, and some even in campsites.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are about 20 people currently living in the encampment on Quinsam Road.<\/p>\n<p>Moen told the Campbell River Mirror that people camped at Quinsam Road \u201chave nothing except their camping stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Constable Tyre agreed, \u201cPeople are just trying to survive the best way they know how and in this case it\u2019s not a sustainable option.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Nunn\u2019s Creek Park<\/h2>\n<p>They will be given the option of camping in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.campbellriver.ca\/planning-building-development\/green-city\/environmental-protection\/nunns-creek\">Nunn\u2019s Creek Park<\/a>, where a city bylaw says they must pack up all of their belongings and leave every morning by 9 AM.
