{"id":145525,"date":"2023-03-21T17:25:00","date_gmt":"2023-03-21T21:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=145525"},"modified":"2023-03-22T11:21:15","modified_gmt":"2023-03-22T15:21:15","slug":"city-councillor-seeks-approval-to-join-board-for-new-housing-non-profit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/city-councillor-seeks-approval-to-join-board-for-new-housing-non-profit\/","title":{"rendered":"City councillor seeks approval to join board for new housing non-profit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kingston City District 8 Councillor Jeff McLaren is seeking approval from council\u00a0 to be appointed to the development board of a new, soon to be incorporated non-profit housing co-operative, <a href=\"https:\/\/lcch.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Limestone City Co-operative Housing<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The co-operative housing units would allow more options for affordable housing in the city. There are no specific sites in mind as of yet, but if the organization becomes incorporated, it will then discuss future proceedings with council.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a news release put out by\u00a0 McLaren, he states why he believes housing co-operatives are beneficial for residents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCo-ops require a minimum of volunteer time for the betterment of the co-op, which both encourages a sense of pride and community through self-governance and working toward a common cause, while also lowering ongoing operating costs,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The decision will be made at the March 21 council meeting whether or not McLaren will be on the development board for the new group.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Update as of March 22: city council moved the motion to approve McLaren on the board.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For the full interview with Jeff McLaren, listen here:<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kingston City District 8 Councillor Jeff McLaren is seeking approval from council\u00a0 to be appointed to the development board of a new, soon to be incorporated non-profit housing co-operative, Limestone City Co-operative Housing.\u00a0 The co-operative housing units would allow more options for affordable housing in the city.
