The bills are building and we must address that,\u201d said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/bc-liberals\/\">BC Liberal<\/a>\u00a0candidate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/norm-facey\/\">Norm Facey<\/a>, in the only interview he granted Cortes Currents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not saying we\u2019re going to run in and balance the budget \u2013 because we\u2019re not. We are going to run in and take care of people. We\u2019re going to make sure that services are extended. We\u2019re going to reduce costs. Data taken from a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbc.ca\/content\/dam\/bnc\/en\/rates-and-analysis\/economic-analysis\/british-columbia-budget.pdf\">statement from the National Bank of Canada<\/a>, various online annual BC Government Accounts, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.taxtips.ca\/statistics\/bcdebt.htm%20https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/t1\/tbl1\/en\/tv.action?pid=1410006401&amp;pickMembers%5B0%5D=1.11&amp;pickMembers%5B1%5D=2.2&amp;pickMembers%5B2%5D=3.2&amp;pickMembers%5B3%5D=5.1&amp;pickMembers%5B4%5D=6.1&amp;cubeTimeFrame.startYear=2000&amp;cubeTimeFrame.endYear=2019&amp;referencePeriods=20000101%2C20190101%20%20https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/employment-business\/employment-standards-advice\/employment-standards\/wages\/minimum-wage\">the provincial debt chart on BC Tax Tips\u00a0<\/a>by Roy L Hales<\/p><\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>The Biggest infrastructure investments<\/h2>\n<p>While many frame this election as Liberal tax cuts vs\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/bc-ndp\/\">NDP<\/a>\u00a0incentives, the Liberals just announced \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcliberals.com\/2020\/10\/05\/bc-liberals-reveal-8-billion-plan-to-rebuild-b-c-commit-to-bridge-replacing-george-massey-tunnel\/\">the biggest infrastructure investment in B.C. history<\/a>.\u2019 They plan to spend almost $31 billion over the next three years on new highway and transit projects, schools, hospitals, and new housing all across B.C.<\/p>\n<p>This is actually similar to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcndp.ca\/platform#pillar4\">NDP\u2019s new Recovery Investment Fund<\/a>, whose estimated cost is roughly the same.<\/p>\n<p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citynews1130.com\/2020\/10\/07\/election-stimulus-skepticism-experts\/\">Professor Werner Antweiler<\/a>, from UBC Sauder School of Business, isn\u2019t convinced either plan would boost the economy, though they could stimulate voting.)<\/p>\n<h2>Giving people money<\/h2>\n<p>The Liberals also propose big tax cuts, including<a href=\"https:\/\/thetyee.ca\/News\/2020\/09\/29\/BC-Liberals-Propose-PST-Tax-Cut\/\">\u00a0$11 billion from the provincial sales tax over the next two years<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/premier-john-horgan\/\">Premier John Horgan<\/a>\u00a0claims it would be more effective to give low and middle income British Columbians a cheque and is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vancouversun.com\/news\/politics\/bc-election\/liberals-and-ndp-spar-over-benefits-of-tax-cut-versus-direct-cash-payments\">promising $1000 to families and $500 to singles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\">\n<p><div id=\"attachment_89090\" style=\"width: 455px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Screen-Shot-2020-10-13-at-7.22.13-AM-445x600.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-89090\" class=\"wp-image-89090\" src=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Screen-Shot-2020-10-13-at-7.22.13-AM-445x600.png\" alt=\"BC's economic challenge: unemployment\" width=\"445\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-89090\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/569373\/unemployment-rate-british-columbia-canada\/\">Unemployment data taken from Statistica<\/a> by Roy L Hales<\/p><\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Contrasting Liberal and NDP Governments<\/h2>\n<p>NDP candidate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/michele-babchuk\/\">Michele Babchuk<\/a>\u00a0contrasted the previous Liberal administration with the current NDP government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA John Horgan government is focused on a an economy that works for everyone, not just the people at the top. The old BC Liberal Government\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ojs.library.ubc.ca\/index.php\/bcstudies\/article\/download\/187787\/186354\/\">took money from BC Hydro and ICBC to fund tax breaks for the rich<\/a>, then increased the rates that people had to pay. MSP doubled. ICBC went up 36%. Hydro went up 87%. Bridge tolls were in place and housing skyrocketed,\u201d she began.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe introduced three balanced budgets, while improving services for people; got rid of MSP [fees]. We\u2019re turning around ICBC and reducing rates by 20%. wages went up 17% in three years.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>COVID<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThen COVID 19 hit. We announced:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>an unprecedented $8 billion to support people and kickstart BC\u2019s economic recovery;<\/li>\n<li>a PST rebate on machinery and equipment, so that people can invest in their business;<\/li>\n<li>a 15% tax credit for hiring new employees.<\/li>\n<li>grants to support 15,000 small and medium businesses, while protecting 200,000 jobs<\/li>\n<li>grants for people to get trained in high demanding fields like health care and child care<\/li>\n<li>And 7,000 new family supporting health care jobs to fight the pandemic.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>She concluded, \u201cWe are putting people at the centre of our recovery, let\u2019s keep going.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\">\n<p><div id=\"attachment_89091\" style=\"width: 458px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Screen-Shot-2020-10-13-at-7.22.38-AM-448x600.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-89091\" class=\"wp-image-89091\" src=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Screen-Shot-2020-10-13-at-7.22.38-AM-448x600.png\" alt=\"BC's economic challenge: wages\" width=\"448\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-89091\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/t1\/tbl1\/en\/tv.action?pid=1410006401\">BC average wages taken from the British Columbia tab \u201cEmployee wages by industry, Statistics Canada<\/a>; minimum wage stats from various news reports by Roy L Hales<\/p><\/div><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>The Liberal Account of these years<\/h2>\n<p>Of course the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcliberals.com\/2019\/09\/04\/restoring-bcs-economic-advantage\/\">Liberal version of these events<\/a>\u00a0is very different. In a recent press release they state, \u201cUnder the NDP-Green coalition government, taxes have increased by over $5.7 billion since 2017 \u2013 that\u2019s an average of $3,025 per household for this year. They\u2019ve added 23 new or increased taxes, including sneaky taxes on soda and Netflix, that far outweigh the benefits of eliminating MSP premiums \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They conclude, \u201cA BC Liberal government led by Andrew Wilkinson will restore BC\u2019s economic advantage by reducing the burden of taxes and red tape, making our province a global destination for technology and innovation where we attract and create the jobs of the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>It\u2019s the small companies<\/h2>\n<p>Green party candidate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/alexandra-morton\/\">Alexandra Morton<\/a>\u00a0suggested, \u201cIf the government forms a Ministry of Climate Action, and inventories what is required to pull us into a Green economy, companies could be invited to submit proposals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice grew more animated when Morton added that corporations are not leading the province\u2019s recovery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat a champion the small businesses are, in job creation. I\u2019ve been talking to mayors and small businesses across my riding and I am so impressed at the initiatives that are underway in places like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/tahsis\/\">Tahsis<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/green%20party%20candidate%20alexandra%20morton\/\">Zeballos<\/a>\u00a0and here in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/sointula\/\">Sointula<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c \u2026 I am so impressed with the measures that are going on at the Strathcona Regional District and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/connected-coast\/\">fibre optic cables<\/a>\u00a0that are being laid to bring high speed connectivity to communities \u2013 which everyone is asking for, it is so important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also look at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cortescurrents.ca\/tag\/food-security\/\">food security<\/a>\u00a0and what needs to be done to create larger gardens and small farms. People already know their communities. Speaking to people in Campbell River, they know where the arable land is and some of it has trees on it. So maybe the province has to release those trees, they get logged and processed in a local mill and then take that land and turn it into sustainable gardens for our communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no one size fits all for the post COVID response.
