{"id":145406,"date":"2023-03-22T00:15:26","date_gmt":"2023-03-22T04:15:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=145406"},"modified":"2023-03-22T00:15:26","modified_gmt":"2023-03-22T04:15:26","slug":"new-exhibit-highlights-traditional-%ca%94ay%ca%94aju%ce%b8%c9%99m-place-names-of-local-region","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/new-exhibit-highlights-traditional-%ca%94ay%ca%94aju%ce%b8%c9%99m-place-names-of-local-region\/","title":{"rendered":"New exhibit highlights traditional \u0294ay\u0294aju\u03b8\u0259m place names of local region"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Cortes Island Museum and Archives Society is launching \u201cWayfinding: Stories of Maps and Place,\u201d an exhibit largely composed of maps created by various inhabitants of the region throughout time, this weekend. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One map is covered in names unique to that map alone, within the exhibit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/new-director-starts-at-cortes-island-museum-archives-society\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Melanie Boyle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the museum's managing director\/curator,<\/span> points to a black and white map of the Discovery Island region as an example of a map with traditional Klahoose names.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Klahoose Place Names Map\u2019 \u2026It's a large format map. We've scanned a copy and reprinted it\u2026that is a really interesting project from 1998, of \u0294ay\u0294aju\u03b8\u0259m (Ayajuthem) place names from the whole region of Klahoose, whether it's Cortes, all the way up to Toba.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Boyle sums up the meaning behind the title of the show and why maps matter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cMaps are something, I think that captures people's imagination.\"\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThere's a personal connection to maps as well. There's always a story behind it,\u201d she went on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A volunteer assisting with the installation, Monika Hoffman, is new to the island. She noted one of her favorite stories within the exhibit is the written word \"Bush Poem\" by local famed author Gilean Douglas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI like it for many reasons,\u201d Monika explained, \u201cbut I think first and foremost, it's the inclusion of the written word. And part of what's largely a visual collection, so it incorporates written word into an arena that's typically dominated by images. And I like how it supports that, but it also just stands on its own.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The exhibit opens <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">March 26 from 1-4 p.m. and <\/span>will be on display through the entire year.
