Cannabis on Cortes Island<\/h2>\n
Cortes Island<\/a>\u2019s zoning bylaw is being amended.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m looking to be able to allow cannabis production and sale, pretty much in alignment with the existing provincial and federal regulations without requiring site specific zoning. but delighted to work with staff to bring something back for the public\u2019s consideration,\u201d said\u00a0Regional Director Noba Anderson<\/a>.<\/p>\n Quadra Island<\/a>\u00a0is talking a different approach and\u00a0Quadraponics Cannabis<\/a>\u00a0property is one of three whose applications for rezoning have just been approved.<\/p>\n The others are the proposed\u00a0BC Ferries berth<\/a>\u00a0in Quathiaski Cove and\u00a0new firehall in Heriot Bay<\/a>.<\/p>\n Heriot Bay Tru Value foods<\/a>\u00a0has been given a commercial development permit for a\u00a0new recycling depot and gardening centre<\/a>.<\/p>\n There has been a lot of talk about\u00a0extending the SRD\u2019s fire protection to north Quadra Island<\/a>\u00a0lately.<\/p>\n \u201cWe have been mulling this over for around a year, I believe. One lady has kept writing to us for services to north Quadra. Problem is they don\u2019t have a fire service on north Quadra. While the survey that they got back said everyone want to have a fire service, nobody wants to pay,\u201d explained\u00a0Regional Director Brenda Leigh<\/a>.<\/p>\n The SRD board decided that no further public consultation be undertaken until more than 50% of property owners and 50% of property values petition in favour of a fire service for North Quadra.<\/p>\n Quadra Island Conservatory<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Quadra Island cat rescue<\/a> have both received grants in aid for $1,500.<\/p>\n There were also two\u00a0Read Island<\/a>\u00a0items.<\/p>\n The\u00a0Surge Narrows Community Association<\/a>\u00a0recently purchased a\u00a020 acre parcel<\/a>\u00a0which they intend to become parkland. The SRD approved an application for this parcel to be tax free.<\/p>\n The SRD is also\u00a0applying for a Rural and Northern communities grant<\/a>\u00a0to renovate the old store, boardwalk and floating dock at Read Island.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019ve already gone through this with staff, the ministries and all the people we have to apply to. This is just the finalizing part of it, officially at the board table. That\u2019s why it is here. It has already happened. We have already met with Minister Selina Robinson at UBCM. This was one of the three topics we talked about,\u201d said\u00a0Regional Director Jim Abram<\/a>.<\/p>\n He added, \u201cThis is hopefully going forward. I believe the deadline \u2026 is the end of this month, October 30th and after that we will receive some kind of notification as to whether we got it or not.
