{"id":144057,"date":"2023-03-09T16:58:24","date_gmt":"2023-03-09T21:58:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=144057"},"modified":"2023-03-09T16:58:24","modified_gmt":"2023-03-09T21:58:24","slug":"were-left-to-fight-for-scraps-underfunding-of-community-sector-leaves-majority-female-workforce-exhausted","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/were-left-to-fight-for-scraps-underfunding-of-community-sector-leaves-majority-female-workforce-exhausted\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018We\u2019re left to fight for scraps\u2019: Underfunding of community sector leaves majority-female workforce exhausted"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nonprofits and charities that make up the community sector perform essential work, but underfunding has left their majority-female workforce exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>That was the message from an advocacy group that demonstrated in the provincial capital on International Women\u2019s Day, calling on governments to invest more in the community sector.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re left to fight for scraps of money among each other,\u201d said Elise Pelletier, communications officer and political analyst for the Moncton-based Regroupement f\u00e9ministe du Nouveau-Brunswick.<\/p>\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4944765 elementor-widget elementor-widget-theme-post-content\" data-id=\"4944765\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"theme-post-content.default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<p>Women make up 80 percent of the workforce in nonprofits and charities, according to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/canadianwomen.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/ResettingNormal-Women-Decent-Work-and-Care-EN.pdf\">2020 report<\/a>\u00a0(PDF link) published by the Canadian Women\u2019s Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s an area of the economy that provides essential caring work but which is \u201cfunded through an inadequate model consisting of unpredictable individual donations and gifts, earned income, and government service and project contracts,\u201d the report states.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the services provided by the community sector affect the well-being and survival of women struggling with issues like homelessness or domestic abuse.<\/p>\n<p>Groups such as Crossroads for Women \u2014 which operates an emergency shelter in Moncton for women, trans and non-binary people and their children \u2014 saw a surge in reports of domestic violence after COVID-19 resulted in lockdowns beginning in March 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s quite worrying for us to witness that, and to see a provincial government raking in a surplus, while we know specifically which organizations need more funds,\u201d Pelletier said.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a reference to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gnb.ca\/content\/gnb\/en\/news\/news_release.2023.02.0059.html\">third-quarter results<\/a>\u00a0for the 2022-23 fiscal year announced last month by the Higgs government, showing a $862.6 million surplus.<\/p>\n<p>In recent decades, governments in countries like Canada, the U.S. and Great Britain have moved towards neoliberal forms of governance that favour free market capitalism, deregulation and reduced government spending.<\/p>\n<p>As part of austerity measures, governments have offloaded the responsibility for social services onto the community sector, resulting in \u201cextreme pressure on those organizations,\u201d Pelletier said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reality is, they\u2019re exhausted, so we have more and more people falling through the cracks,\u201d she said, adding that activities like grant applications take up significant resources that could otherwise be used to deliver essential services.<\/p>\n<p>Women in the community sector, who tend to earn less than their male counterparts, end up performing unpaid work to ensure the work gets done, she said.<\/p>\n<p>CHMA also reached out to Margaret Tusz-King, a Sackville resident with an extensive background in the community sector.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen who work in the community sector in North America are poorly paid, with few savings, if any,\u201d she said in an email.<\/p>\n<p>A few years ago, she was involved in a lobbying effort, pushing the government to support retirement investments for workers in the community sector.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe statistic that floored me at that time was that most women who retire after a lifetime of service to community work such as food banks, childcare and working with the disadvantaged, have an average of just $800 savings by the time they are 65, with no other assets,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Was that a typo? Nope, just $800.<\/p>\n<p>Once their Canadian Pension Plan, Old Age Security and the Guaranteed Income Supplement are factored in, many women retire with an income of \u201cperhaps $24,000 per year,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nonprofits and charities that make up the community sector perform essential work, but underfunding has left their majority-female workforce exhausted.
