{"id":142406,"date":"2023-02-28T13:38:25","date_gmt":"2023-02-28T18:38:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=142406"},"modified":"2023-02-28T14:10:58","modified_gmt":"2023-02-28T19:10:58","slug":"cortes-literacy-book-club-gets-off-the-ground-with-ereader-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/cortes-literacy-book-club-gets-off-the-ground-with-ereader-grant\/","title":{"rendered":"Cortes Literacy book club gets off the ground with eReader grant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A grant of eReaders from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kobo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rakuten Kobo<\/a> has translated into a monthly book club on Cortes Island where readers use both print and digital media to access titles.<\/p>\n<p>Late last year, 20 Kobo eReaders came under <a href=\"https:\/\/folku.ca\/literacy-hub\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cortes Literacy's<\/a> stewardship. Through the partnership, a regular book club is now being held: readers have access to the devices and subscriptions to the Kobo Plus book library included with the grant, as well as public library's offerings.<\/p>\n<p>Rebeka Carpenter, the book club's current organizer, has also just obtained a special book club library card from the <a href=\"https:\/\/virl.bc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vancouver Island Regional Library<\/a>, which provides a 12-copy set of one title at a time.<\/p>\n<p>\"I'm hopeful that once those start coming down the pike and I can distribute those to people, it'll spur more reading and enjoyment of books,\" she said.<\/p>\n<p>About 20 people are currently on the book club's email list, with more inquiring about book recommendations.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_142436\" style=\"width: 369px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-142436\" class=\" wp-image-142436\" src=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/image000000.jpg\" alt=\"A fireplace set into a grey stone wall and living room furnishings.\" width=\"359\" height=\"160\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/image000000.jpg 974w, https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/image000000-500x223.jpg 500w, https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/image000000-320x143.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 359px) 100vw, 359px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-142436\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The location for the next meeting is in a home in Whaletown.
