{"id":139874,"date":"2023-02-08T12:05:41","date_gmt":"2023-02-08T17:05:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=139874"},"modified":"2023-02-09T10:16:43","modified_gmt":"2023-02-09T15:16:43","slug":"northern-health-working-to-reduce-impacts-of-possible-service-interruptions-on-haida-gwaii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/northern-health-working-to-reduce-impacts-of-possible-service-interruptions-on-haida-gwaii\/","title":{"rendered":"Northern Health working to reduce impacts of possible service interruptions on Haida Gwaii"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A provincial issue with medical staff shortages may result in some temporary emergency service interruptions for Haida Gwaii, but Northern Health says they are working to mitigate the impact.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Northern Haida Gwaii Hospital in Masset has been facing challenges in recruiting and retaining staff.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Northwest Chief Operating Officer for Northern Health Ciro Panessa says that because there were already low staff numbers at the remote hospital, there is less of a \u201cbuffer zone\u201d before a service interruption may be faced.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Panessa said that when figuring out a possible temporary closure, they work to mitigate the impact on the community by closing the emergency room when, historically, there are fewer patients.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if the emergency room faces temporary interruptions, the hospital will remain open 24\/7 for long-term care patients and there are no plans for permanent closures or reductions of services.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019ll also expand bed counts at the Haida Gwaii Hospital in Daajing Giids and ensure transportation is available between the two for both patients and family members.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Feb. 3, Northern Health <a href=\"https:\/\/stories.northernhealth.ca\/news\/taking-action-stabilize-health-services-masset\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> that Haida Gwaii is now covered under the Northern Retention Incentive.
