{"id":139280,"date":"2023-02-06T17:50:36","date_gmt":"2023-02-06T22:50:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=139280"},"modified":"2023-02-06T17:50:36","modified_gmt":"2023-02-06T22:50:36","slug":"city-council-restaurateurs-try-to-find-compromise-in-permanent-cafeto-proposal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/city-council-restaurateurs-try-to-find-compromise-in-permanent-cafeto-proposal\/","title":{"rendered":"City council, restaurateurs try to find compromise in permanent CafeTO proposal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">City councillors continue to discuss the future of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/business-economy\/business-operation-growth\/business-support\/covid-19-cafeto\/\"><span class=\"il\">Caf\u00e9TO<\/span>\u00a0pilot project<\/a>, and whether it should become a permanent fixture as the city enters a transitional phase amid the COVID-19 pandemic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Toronto Mayor John Tory presided over the recent meeting, hearing the presentation of the project\u2019s future from Transportation Division services general manager Barbara Gray.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span class=\"il\">Caf\u00e9TO<\/span> is a success story for our hospitality industry, and has enhanced the look and feel of our city,\" Tory said. \"As we move out of the COVID-19 pandemic, proposed changes will make <span class=\"il\">Caf\u00e9TO<\/span>\u00a0more sustainable for years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The popular pilot project allowed restaurants to expand outdoor seating when indoor dining was limited during the height of COVID.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Installations on the sidewalks and into the city roads accommodated the extra customers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The steady flow of customers allowed many local businesses to stay afloat during COVID.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Deputations at the meeting welcomed the continuation of the project, however they disagree with the increased costs to keep it going.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They pointed out that restaurants are still recovering from the pandemic, and have yet to recoup the same revenue levels before the lockdowns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Further, deputations said restaurants are still dealing with the expenses during the lockdown and a period labour shortages. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The new proposal for continuing C<span class=\"il\">af\u00e9TO<\/span> includes a one-time application fee of about $865.00.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Also, there will be yearly payments of $132.00 per square metre on curb lanes and $44.14 per square metre on sidewalk lanes for the installations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sidewalk lanes for extra seating is estimated to be $14,000.
