{"id":139103,"date":"2023-02-02T16:35:50","date_gmt":"2023-02-02T21:35:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=139103"},"modified":"2023-02-02T16:35:50","modified_gmt":"2023-02-02T21:35:50","slug":"council-votes-to-reject-athol-battery-energy-storage-site","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/council-votes-to-reject-athol-battery-energy-storage-site\/","title":{"rendered":"Council votes to reject Athol battery energy storage site"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Tuesday (Jan. 31), Prince Edward County Council at a special session voted to deny their support for the proposed Athol battery energy storage system (BESS) project on Mowbray Road.<\/p>\n<p>Council\u2019s decision (which was in the wake of their <a href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/council-votes-to-reject-picton-mass-battery-energy-storage-site\/\">denial for the much larger Picton BESS site<\/a>), was for the negative, despite a <a href=\"https:\/\/princeedwardcounty.civicweb.net\/FileStorage\/9513C6FD46C64E28A34332D6C007EE86-OPS-01-2023%20FINAL%20(CAOsigned).pdf\">staff report calling for acceptance<\/a> of the proponent Solar Flow-Through Funds\u2019s pair of 3 MW BESS sites. The staff report was in the affirmative because of the project\u2019s utility in local grid stability and because the outstanding risks of the lithium-phosphate technology could be addressed in a later site approval process. However, the report\u2019s author admitted that they were not an expert in electrical systems and that the data concerning lithium-phosphate energy storage technology safety in regard to fires was limited.<\/p>\n<p>Ameliasburgh Councillor Janice Maynard, who was supportive of staff\u2019s BESS recommendation, had the following to say about the differences that lithium-phosphate technology offers (compared to the lithium-ion technology of the previous Picton BESS site proposal):<\/p>\n<!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('audio');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-139103-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Maynard-Voicer.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Maynard-Voicer.mp3\">https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Maynard-Voicer.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p>Council voted 8 to 5 against the Athol BESS.
