{"id":138418,"date":"2023-01-31T15:00:23","date_gmt":"2023-01-31T20:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=138418"},"modified":"2023-01-31T15:00:23","modified_gmt":"2023-01-31T20:00:23","slug":"pickleball-dominates-the-courts-of-cortes-inside-and-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/pickleball-dominates-the-courts-of-cortes-inside-and-out\/","title":{"rendered":"Pickleball dominates the courts of Cortes, inside and out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0As the popularity of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pickleballcanada.org\/january-2022-survey-national-release\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">pickleball grows nationally,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the sport has become a regular pastime on Cortes Island with the resurgence of team sports this winter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The school gym is booked four nights a week for adult sports, with pickleball offered twice weekly. If the weather is nice, pickleball moves to the outdoor courts at the Cortes Island School as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Alex Hornby is a regular pickleballer at the courts and shared his early impressions of the game with CKTZ.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cMy first thing I heard about it was [that it was] a sport that old people at nudist clubs play.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hornby was encouraged to play pickleball on Cortes Island and now he loves the sport. Hornby described it the way many other players do: \u201caddictive.\u201d His partner, Darshan Stevens, said one of the reasons it's so easy to get into is that people improve quickly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt's a sport that is very rewarding when you first start playing it...you can do fairly well at it fairly quickly. And people just get hooked and then they wanna play more,\u201d Stevens said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Aside from being fun, Stevens highlights the health benefits of the sport.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cPickleball has led me down a whole road of getting really into fitness in general. So it's been like a gateway drug for me \u2026and really good for my mental health to get into fitness.
