{"id":138148,"date":"2023-01-26T21:55:19","date_gmt":"2023-01-27T02:55:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=138148"},"modified":"2023-01-26T21:55:19","modified_gmt":"2023-01-27T02:55:19","slug":"toronto-police-announce-more-officers-on-ttc-amid-increasing-violence-against-riders-transit-staff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/toronto-police-announce-more-officers-on-ttc-amid-increasing-violence-against-riders-transit-staff\/","title":{"rendered":"Toronto Police announce more officers on TTC amid increasing violence against riders, transit staff"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Toronto Police are announcing the increase of officers on the TTC(Toronto Transit Commission), including subway stops, trains and buses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The announcement comes as the city grips with more random attacks against residents and TTC staff.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese deployments will focus on reducing victimization, preventing crimes of opportunity and enhancing public safety,\u201d said Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw. \u201cGiven this, our deployments will be dynamic and may change from day-to-day. However, our officers will be on, in, and around the transit system, across the city, throughout the day and late into the evening each and every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since November, there has been an uptick in unprovoked assaults on the trains, buses and streetcars.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">More recently, a woman was stabbed on the Spadina streetcar and a 16-year-old boy on a TTC bus outside Old Mill Station.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Demkiw said the aim is to have more than 80 police officers in place throughout the city\u2019s transit locations on a daily basis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The positions will be filled by\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">off-duty officers in an overtime capacity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The announcement is also in the midst of the pending increased <a href=\"https:\/\/data.torontopolice.on.ca\/pages\/budget\">police budget<\/a> getting its approval.
