{"id":137217,"date":"2023-01-24T17:31:24","date_gmt":"2023-01-24T22:31:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=137217"},"modified":"2023-01-24T17:31:24","modified_gmt":"2023-01-24T22:31:24","slug":"forestry-cooperative-explores-value-added-timber-products-as-way-to-do-more-with-less","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/forestry-cooperative-explores-value-added-timber-products-as-way-to-do-more-with-less\/","title":{"rendered":"Forestry cooperative explores value-added timber products as way to do more with less"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to the BC government, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.env.gov.bc.ca\/soe\/indicators\/land\/timber-harvest.html#:~:text=Recent%20analysis%20projects%20decreases%20in,metres%20per%20year%20by%202075.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent projections<\/a> indicate there will be a decline in timber supply by 2025 throughout the province.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the <a href=\"https:\/\/cortescommunityforestcoop.org\/what-we-do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cortes Island Community Forestry Cooperative (CCFC)<\/a> is hoping to find creative ways to repurpose timber on the island. The organization is holding a public meeting this weekend that aims to get public input on creating value added wood products from timber harvested on its nearly 4,000 hectare tenure.<\/p>\n<p>\"Value-added products include treated lumber, engineered wood products, shakes and shingles, posts, poles, log and timber-frame homes, mouldings, pallets, boxes, cabinets, furniture, art and other finished or semi-finished goods. These products generate more economic value per unit, but their manufacture is typically marked by low volumes of output,\" the BC government <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/assets\/gov\/farming-natural-resources-and-industry\/forestry\/generating-more-value\/generating_more_value_from_our_forests.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> in A<em> Vision and Action Plan<\/em><br \/>\n<em>for Further Manufacturing<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In November, the CCFC <a href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/community-forest-cooperative-seeks-proposals-to-create-products-from-local-wood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">put out an initial call<\/a> for proposals for the creation of value-added products. However, the response from Cortes Island citizens was minimal.<\/p>\n<p>CCFC president Carrie Saxifrage says it's an opportune time as the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gov.bc.ca\/releases\/2023JEDI0004-000041\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BC government invests $90 million<\/a>\u00a0in forestry dependent communities for secondary manufacturing.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_137227\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-137227\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-137227\" src=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_1109-250x250.jpg\" alt=\"A wooden post carved by an artist shows wavy lines, a paddle and colored lights.\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-137227\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An artist carved post in the Saxifrage home on Cortes Island. Photo by Greg Osoba.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Saxifrage says the organization is a partnership between the non-Indigenous community on Cortes Island and the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.klahoose.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Klahoose First Nation<\/a>. She adds that the public input from the upcoming meeting will result in a roadmap to guide the creation of locally made value added wood products: Saxifrage sees the strategy as a way for forestry dependent communities to create jobs and determine their own destiny as timber supplies dwindle.<\/p>\n<p>Funding for the initiative comes from timber sales from the CCFC's logging operations and a $20,000 grant received from the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.islandcoastaltrust.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Island Coastal Economic Trust<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The CCFC meeting will be held <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cortesisland.com\/tideline\/show15225a\/Cortes_Value-Added_Wood_Products_this_Saturday\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Saturday, Jan. 28<\/a>, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Klahoose First Nation multi-purpose building.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Saxifrage discusses the process and possibilities in the interview below with CKTZ News:<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to the BC government, recent projections indicate there will be a decline in timber supply by 2025 throughout the province.
