{"id":136709,"date":"2023-01-18T16:46:52","date_gmt":"2023-01-18T21:46:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=136709"},"modified":"2023-01-19T13:17:03","modified_gmt":"2023-01-19T18:17:03","slug":"toronto-mp-asks-for-inquiry-into-provinces-plans-for-foundry-heritage-buildings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/toronto-mp-asks-for-inquiry-into-provinces-plans-for-foundry-heritage-buildings\/","title":{"rendered":"Toronto MP asks for inquiry into province&#8217;s plans for Foundry heritage buildings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toronto Centre MP Kristyn Wong-Tam said an inquiry into the provincial government\u2019s plans for the Foundry is essential.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This marks two years since the Ontario government purchased the Foundry, which is part of the larger plan to transform the city's Don lands area into new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.waterfrontoronto.ca\/our-projects\/scope-scale\/west-don-lands\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">waterfront housing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Foundry at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eastern Avenue near River Street are four <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">industrial buildings of the Dominion Foundry Complex, all owned by the province.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are listed on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/legdocs\/mmis\/2021\/cc\/bgrd\/backgroundfile-163205.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Toronto\u2019s heritage register,<\/a> but the city has no power to prevent their destruction and redevelopment by the province.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Demolition attempts by construction crews have continued since 2020, but each time the surrounding communities have fought back against these attempts. This included winning a court injunction to temporarily save the buildings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The local community group, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.friendsofthefoundry.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Friends of the Foundry<\/a>, established a website dedicated to keeping the province in check, gather and distribute information about redevelopment possibilities, and sharing the cultural and historical importance of the heritage site.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2020, the group gathered more than 22,000 signatures on their petition to stop the initial demolition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CJRU has contacted the Friends of the Foundry for comment, and are awaiting a response.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More details to come.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Listen to CJRU's coverage on the current news about the Foundry:<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Toronto Centre MP Kristyn Wong-Tam said an inquiry into the provincial government\u2019s plans for the Foundry is essential.\u00a0 This marks two years since the Ontario government purchased the Foundry, which is part of the larger plan to transform the city&#8217;s Don lands area into new waterfront housing.
