{"id":135991,"date":"2023-01-13T19:41:09","date_gmt":"2023-01-14T00:41:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=135991"},"modified":"2023-01-13T19:43:05","modified_gmt":"2023-01-14T00:43:05","slug":"family-fundraiser-brings-out-community-support-for-beloved-teacher-mrs-maxwell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/family-fundraiser-brings-out-community-support-for-beloved-teacher-mrs-maxwell\/","title":{"rendered":"Family fundraiser brings out community support for beloved teacher, \u2018Mrs. Maxwell\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sarah Cormier says she always knew her mother was important to many a Sackvillian. \u201cIt\u2019s almost part of my identity,\u201d says Cormier. \u201cI say, \u2018oh, I\u2019m Mrs. Maxwell\u2019s daughter,\u2019 when I\u2019m trying to explain to someone how I\u2019m related to people.\u201d But even so, once Cormier started organizing a fundraiser to help her mother with her stage 4 cancer treatment, she was overwhelmed by the response.<\/p>\n<p>Cormier has received messages and pictures harkening back to Susan Maxwell\u2019s many decades as a teacher in the Tantramar area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether she taught you or your parents, your children, your siblings, it just seems that she\u2019s really touched a lot of lives in Sackville,\u201d says Cormier. She\u2019s heard from people saying, \u201coh, she was my favourite teacher, or she really got me through high school\u2026 I remember her being so caring and so funny.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a bit overwhelming, to be honest,\u201d says Cormier. \u201cIt\u2019s kind of a troubling time for us right now, and so the memories have been really great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/596240222303214\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fundraiser organized by Cormier <\/a>and her partner culminates in an event this Saturday at the Sackville Legion, featuring musical performances, a silent auction, 50-50 draw and raffles. The pair have also set up a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/f\/fundraiser-for-susan-maxwell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GoFundMe page <\/a>to make it easier for people near and far to contribute. The money will go towards covering the costs of Maxwell\u2019s care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of unknown costs that come up with a cancer diagnosis,\u201d says Cormier, \u201cwhether it be medications, or someone to help you out in the home.\u201d Cormier says even getting the usual bills paid after an serious illness diagnosis can be challenging. \u201cWe just really want to help her out, so that she\u2019s able to really just focus on beating cancer and staying healthy,\u201d says Cormier.<\/p>\n<p>The doors open at 6pm on Saturday, and the music is expected to start at 7pm. Cormier says \u201cquite a few wonderful things\u201d have been donated for the silent auction, and some larger items will be raffled off. For those who can\u2019t make it to the end of the evening, Cormier says there will be the option to leave a name and number and be contacted later.<\/p>\n<p>Cormier says the family is thankful for \u201call this generosity and the support that we\u2019ve gotten from the community and beyond.
