{"id":134559,"date":"2023-01-05T12:40:44","date_gmt":"2023-01-05T17:40:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=134559"},"modified":"2023-01-05T12:40:44","modified_gmt":"2023-01-05T17:40:44","slug":"first-national-ribbon-skirt-day-celebrated-in-canada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/first-national-ribbon-skirt-day-celebrated-in-canada\/","title":{"rendered":"First National Ribbon Skirt Day celebrated in Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-cke-copybin-start=\"1\">\u200b<\/span>This Jan. 4 marks the inaugural National Ribbon Skirt Day in Canada, a day celebrating Indigenous women and their traditional regalia and culture.<\/p>\n<p>National Ribbon Skirt Day begins with the story of Isabella Kulak, an Indigenous girl from Saskatchewan, who wore a traditional ribbon skirt to her school in 2020 when she was 10-years-old and was told it wasn't formal and she couldn't wear it.<\/p>\n<p>The movement started by Kulak grew to a national scale, with the goal of inspiring other Indigenous women, of all ages, to be proud of what they wear, and who they are, and to be themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Jamie Smallboy, lead of the Red Ribbon Skirt Project in Vancouver, is from Maskwacis, Alberta and has had her fair share of experiencing Indigenous racism growing up.<\/p>\n<p>Smallboy ended up losing touch with her culture, she says, until she was in Vancouver and found herself through a Women's Memorial March. The experience led her to rediscover who she really was and helped her express her true self and heritage once again.<\/p>\n<p>National Ribbon Skirt Day was <a href=\"https:\/\/pm.gc.ca\/en\/news\/statements\/2023\/01\/04\/statement-prime-minister-national-ribbon-skirt-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">passed unanimously into law by parliament last month<\/a> after first being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parl.ca\/DocumentViewer\/en\/43-2\/bill\/S-227\/first-reading\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">introduced by Dr. Mary Jane McCallum<\/a>, an Indigenous senator from Manitoba, in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>\u200b<strong>Listen to the full CFWE Interview below with Jamie Smallboy:<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u200bThis Jan. 4 marks the inaugural National Ribbon Skirt Day in Canada, a day celebrating Indigenous women and their traditional regalia and culture.
