{"id":134267,"date":"2022-12-31T02:25:29","date_gmt":"2022-12-31T07:25:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=134267"},"modified":"2022-12-31T02:25:29","modified_gmt":"2022-12-31T07:25:29","slug":"housing-advocates-criticize-torontos-warming-centre-closures-during-the-holidays","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/housing-advocates-criticize-torontos-warming-centre-closures-during-the-holidays\/","title":{"rendered":"Housing advocates criticize Toronto&#8217;s warming centre closures during the holidays"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Housing advocates are criticising the City of Toronto\u2019s frequent closures of its warming centres this week.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Advocates said that the city continues to close these centres despite fluctuating weather conditions and the ongoing shortage of shelter beds and space.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This week, the city closed its warming centres at 12 P.M on Dec. 28 after being active for less than a week.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Outrage stems from the death of an unhoused individual sleeping outside who died on Christmas Day due to the inclement weather. The deceased individual is known as A.R, and their name is expected to be added to the Homeless Memorial outside the Church of the Holy Trinity in January.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Opening of the centres were responses to the city\u2019s extreme cold weather reaching minus-20, strong winds and up to 15 cm of snow.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The city announced that its focus will shift to finding shelter spaces for its unhoused residents, but advocates are pointing out that individuals continue to be denied a bed each night due to over capacity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_134272\" style=\"width: 494px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-134272\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-134272\" src=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Toronto-warming-centres-484x500.png\" alt=\"Black and white text on a white and brown backgrounds.
