{"id":133635,"date":"2022-12-19T08:00:16","date_gmt":"2022-12-19T13:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=133635"},"modified":"2022-12-22T18:27:41","modified_gmt":"2022-12-22T23:27:41","slug":"in-our-lifetime-i-think-we-will-see-fusion-reactors-mount-a-subatomic-physicist-on-u-s-department-of-energy-breakthrough","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/in-our-lifetime-i-think-we-will-see-fusion-reactors-mount-a-subatomic-physicist-on-u-s-department-of-energy-breakthrough\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018In our lifetime, I think we will see fusion reactors\u2019: Mount A. subatomic physicist on U.S. Department of Energy breakthrough"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The tech and science world is abuzz with news that scientists in the United States have reached what\u2019s been called a breakthrough in the quest for nuclear fusion energy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The US Department of Energy made the announcement on Tuesday.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It said scientists at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, in the San Francisco Bay Area, have achieved a \u201cmajor scientific breakthrough decades in the making that will pave the way for advancements in national defence and the future of clean power.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The experiment involved a laser system the size of a sports stadium \u201cto create temperatures and pressures like those in the cores of stars and giant planets, and inside exploding nuclear weapons.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The statement explained that on Dec. 5, a team at the National Ignition Facility \"conducted the first controlled fusion experiment in history to reach this milestone, also known as scientific energy <\/span>breakeven<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, meaning it produced more energy from fusion than the laser energy used to drive it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Department of Energy has acknowledged that many scientific and technological developments will be required before the technology can be harnessed for day-to-day energy needs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And critics say we\u2019ve heard this kind of high-flying announcement before for allegedly transformative technologies that made big headlines, but didn\u2019t live up to the hype.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Here is Sackville, we\u2019re lucky to have a community of experts on hand to help us make sense of this kind of news.
