{"id":132818,"date":"2022-12-19T03:41:29","date_gmt":"2022-12-19T08:41:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=132818"},"modified":"2022-12-19T03:41:29","modified_gmt":"2022-12-19T08:41:29","slug":"abbotsford-police-chief-explores-the-role-repeat-offenders-have-on-crime-numbers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/abbotsford-police-chief-explores-the-role-repeat-offenders-have-on-crime-numbers\/","title":{"rendered":"Abbotsford Police Chief explores the role repeat offenders have on crime numbers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"s-0\">Despite relatively low property crime rates in Abbotsford, violent crime has increased, according to Police Chief, Mike\u00a0Serr.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s-1\">\u201cWe are seeing property crime being reduced in\u00a0Abbotsford.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s-2\">We are seeing that in jurisdictions that are around us as well currently,\u201d explains\u00a0Serr.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s-3\">\u201cWe have the lowest property crime rate per 100,000 people population of all the surrounding communities.\u201d It\u2019s not all good news, though, for the province\u2019s largest municipality outside the\u00a0GVRD.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s-4\">\u201cViolent crime rate is trending\u00a0upwards.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s-5\">A lot of that is what we call Street Assaults.\u201dAbbotsford doesn\u2019t have the random assaults and stranger attacks that are found in other\u00a0communities.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s-6\">With lower levels of crime, the police\u2019s goal is to see those offenders get the help and support to find the underlying\u00a0issue.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s-7\">However, the concern is that a small percentage of individuals do a disproportionate amount of crime, and are known repeat violent offenders, who are not following through with their\u00a0probation.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s-8\">Serr believes offenders need to be held accountable when they inevitably commit another crime and then are released back into the\u00a0community.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s-9\">I wouldn\u2019t say it\u2019s a \u2018huge\u2019 problem,\u201d He\u00a0says.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s-10\">\u201cIs it a problem?
