{"id":132655,"date":"2022-12-16T18:00:53","date_gmt":"2022-12-16T23:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=132655"},"modified":"2022-12-16T18:00:53","modified_gmt":"2022-12-16T23:00:53","slug":"councillors-formally-vote-to-request-repeal-of-bill-39-strong-mayor-powers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/councillors-formally-vote-to-request-repeal-of-bill-39-strong-mayor-powers\/","title":{"rendered":"Councillors formally vote to request repeal of Bill 39, strong mayor powers\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the Ontario government plans to fully implement the storng mayor system in Toronto,\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the majority of the city's councillors voted to request its official repeal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bill 39, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ola.org\/en\/legislative-business\/bills\/parliament-43\/session-1\/bill-39\">the Better Municipal Governance Act<\/a>, would allow Toronto Mayor John Tory the ability to pass bills with only one third of the council support, as well as have veto powers in certain votes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The motion reads that the city council request\u00a0 that the current mayor of Toronto, and all future mayors, to not exercise any power that \"allows for motions to be passed with less than 50% plus one majority of council members present.\"\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the motion's vote, 14 voted \"yes\" and 11 \"no.\" Coun. <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jon Burnside was not present at the meeting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Voters of \"no\" include Tory and Ward 13 Toronto Centre Coun. Chris Moise.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Prior the motion, Coun. Matlow and Tory were engaged in a heated discussion when Tory presented a motion regarding the upcoming budget.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Matlow asked Tory about the strong mayor powers during a motion on the province helping the city during a \"COVID budget short fall.
