Tom<\/span> Way<\/span>man<\/span>,<\/span> a<\/span> Winlaw resident and former<\/span> instructor<\/span> at<\/span> the<\/span> David<\/span> Thompson<\/span> University<\/span> Centre<\/span> (DTUC) in<\/span> Nelson<\/span>,<\/span> BC<\/span>,<\/span> is<\/span> looking<\/span> to<\/span> reconnect<\/span> with<\/span> former<\/span> staff<\/span> and<\/span> students<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Way<\/span>man<\/span>,<\/span> who<\/span> worked<\/span> at<\/span> the<\/span> now-defunct centre<\/span> as a writing instructor, told KCR News that the 2023 reunion for students and staff has been in the works for some time, but that the group is hoping to see as many pre-registered as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"For me, personally, it is a way of celebrating those successes, and keeping an eye on what might develop yet,\" Wayman said.<\/p>\n

According<\/span> to<\/span> Way<\/span>man<\/span>,<\/span> the<\/span> centre<\/span> was<\/span> an<\/span> important<\/span> part<\/span> of<\/span> the<\/span> region<\/span>'s<\/span> educational<\/span> landscape, particularly for its experimental approach and openness around the curriculums.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

DTUC was a consortium of the University of Victoria (UVic) and Selkirk College. It was established in 1979 on the premises of Notre Dame University of Nelson following NDU\u2019s closure in 1977\u00a0and<\/span> was<\/span> originally<\/span> designed<\/span> to<\/span> provide<\/span> access<\/span> to<\/span> university<\/span>-<\/span>level<\/span> courses<\/span> for<\/span> people<\/span> living<\/span> in<\/span> the<\/span> West<\/span> K<\/span>oot<\/span>en<\/span>ay<\/span> region<\/span>. <\/span>DTUC students could obtain a UVic BA degree, and the institution incorporated Nelson\u2019s former Kootenay School of Art, which became DTUC\u2019s fine arts department. Instruction was available in a wide range of subjects, including photography, creative writing, and rural teacher education.<\/p>\n

After a B.C. government assessment committee in fall 1983 approved the continuation of the province\u2019s only \u201cuniversity centre,\u201d the government reversed course following the collapse of the November 1983 public sector general strike, which had been widely supported in the West Kootenay.<\/p>\n

DTUC was ordered to close May 1, 1984.<\/p>\n
