{"id":129538,"date":"2022-11-30T18:06:01","date_gmt":"2022-11-30T23:06:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=129538"},"modified":"2022-12-01T15:37:32","modified_gmt":"2022-12-01T20:37:32","slug":"higgs-plan-to-abolish-french-immersion-prompts-sackville-parents-to-form-grassroots-group","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/higgs-plan-to-abolish-french-immersion-prompts-sackville-parents-to-form-grassroots-group\/","title":{"rendered":"Higgs&#8217; plan to abolish French immersion prompts Sackville parents to form grassroots group"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Controversy continues over Premier Blaine Higgs\u2019 decision to axe French immersion in Canada\u2019s only officially bilingual province.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The controversial decision became widely known in October, when then-Minister of Education Dominic Cardy announced his resignation in an explosive open letter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the time, Cardy blasted Higgs, saying the premier had pushed the Education Department to \u201cabolish French immersion by September 2023.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The province says French immersion will be replaced with a program geared towards better conversational French for all students.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supporters of that plan argue that immersion has failed to produce enough graduates fluent in French, while creating a two-tiered system of education, in which students with learning challenges are concentrated in the non-immersion stream.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But many questions remain about what exactly will replace the French immersion system, which some parents say is a crucial aspect of the education system, especially in New Brunswick.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Critics of the government also point to the premier\u2019s push for a unilingual province dating back to the 1980s, when he ran for the leadership of the anti-bilingual Confederation of Regions Party (CoR)..\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The planned abolition of French immersion in New Brunswick has provoked the wrath of some local residents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A grassroots organization appears to be taking shape in Sackville. People involved in the initiative held their first in-person meeting Tuesday evening at the Sackville Commons Co-op.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About two dozen people turned out for the public meeting of the group, which is calling itself French Immersion Supporters in Sackville.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>CHMA asked parents at the meeting why they decided to get involved.
