{"id":127877,"date":"2022-11-21T12:34:46","date_gmt":"2022-11-21T17:34:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=127877"},"modified":"2022-11-21T12:34:46","modified_gmt":"2022-11-21T17:34:46","slug":"trans-health-care-should-not-be-up-for-debate-toronto-centre-mpp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/trans-health-care-should-not-be-up-for-debate-toronto-centre-mpp\/","title":{"rendered":"Trans health care should not be up for debate: Toronto Centre MPP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Toronto Centre MPP Kristyn Wong-Tam tabled a bill called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kristynwongtam.ca\/affirmingcare\">Gender Affirming Health Care Act<\/a> this month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The bill was previously tabled by Wong-Tam\u2019s Toronto Centre MPP predecessor, Suze Morrison.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wong-Tam said the bill was tabled ahead of the Trans Day of Remembrance on Nov. 20 to give the Ontario House of Commons time to prepare for the day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With support from other MPPs who identify as part of the 2SLGBTQ+ communities and healthcare providers, Wong-Tam is hoping for the Ontario government to support them as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>City-based supporters <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">include Dr. Kate Greenaway, whose work is centred on trans health at a city-based clinic on Dundas St. W.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">During a press conference following the tabling of the bill, she said her clinic, called the Connect-clinic, continues to have a waitlist of over 2000 people who require gender affirming care. Further, Dr. Greenaway said the city and province\u2019s healthcare system require revamping.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Also present at the press conference was the 519, the Toronto agency dedicated to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">health, happiness and full participation of the 2SLGBTQ+ communities, according to its website.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Chair of the 519 board,<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Pam Hrick, said there is an urgent need for wider access to gender affirming care, calling it \"a human rights issue.\"<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CJRU reached out to Wong-Tam\u2019s office, the Connect-clinic and the 519 for comment regarding the bill\u2019s retabling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CJRU is awaiting a reply.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">More details to come.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Listen to CJRU's coverage of the Gender Affirming Care Act press conference:<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Toronto Centre MPP Kristyn Wong-Tam tabled a bill called the Gender Affirming Health Care Act this month.
