{"id":127420,"date":"2022-11-17T16:45:26","date_gmt":"2022-11-17T21:45:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=127420"},"modified":"2022-11-17T16:45:26","modified_gmt":"2022-11-17T21:45:26","slug":"textbook-for-undergrads-creates-new-narrative-on-indigenous-healthcare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/textbook-for-undergrads-creates-new-narrative-on-indigenous-healthcare\/","title":{"rendered":"Textbook for undergrads creates new narrative on Indigenous healthcare"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On the campus of the University of Northern British Columbia in Prince George, a new textbook lines tables and bookshelves in student centres.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sarah De Leeuw along with a team of editors have created a new textbook called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianscholars.ca\/book\/introduction-to-determinants-of-first-nations-inuit-and-metis-peoples-health-in-canada\/\"><b><i>Introduction to Determinants of First Nations, Inuit, and M\u00e9tis Peoples\u2019 Health in Canada<\/i><\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Canadian Scholars\u2019 Press, 2022). The aim of this textbook is to focus on Indigenous voices and stories to to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">address coloniality in health care and First Nations, Inuit, and M\u00e9tis peoples\u2019 health and well-being.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The editors who\u2019ve created this textbook are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.unbc.ca\/people\/greenwood-dr-margo\">Margo Greenwood<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a Cree scholar and Professor of Education and First Nations Studies at the University of Northern British Columbia. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.unbc.ca\/people\/de-leeuw-dr-sarah\">Sarah de Leeuw<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, an award-winning creative writer and Canada Research Chair in Humanities and Health Inequities with the University of Northern British Columbia\u2019s Northern Medical Program in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ca.linkedin.com\/in\/roberta-stout-32024623\">Roberta Stout<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a Senior Policy Advisor in the Health Sector at the Assembly of First Nations and a member of Kehewin Cree Nation. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/healtharts.ca\/profiles\/roseann-larstone\/\">Roseann Larstone<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Regional Director, Indigenous Health, at the Northern Health Authority in British Columbia and a member of the Manitoba M\u00e9tis Federation. And <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/juliesutherland.ca\/bio\/\">Julie Sutherland<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a Research Associate with the National Collaborating Centre for Indigenous Health and an award-winning lecturer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>These 5 editors' experiences collided to create an informative textbook to dismantle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/health\/no-single-fix-for-anti-indigenous-racism-in-canada-s-health-care-system-doctor-1.6090855\">anti-Indigenous racism in the Canadian healthcare system<\/a>. \"The beauty of the textbook is that it is not only for undergrad students,\" Sarah de Leeuw said in an interview with CICK News. \"It is meant for practitioners, doctors, MOAs (Medical Office Administrators) and would even be a great read for a book club.
