{"id":126346,"date":"2022-11-11T15:59:42","date_gmt":"2022-11-11T20:59:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=126346"},"modified":"2022-11-11T15:59:42","modified_gmt":"2022-11-11T20:59:42","slug":"toronto-winter-plan-met-with-disappointment-from-housing-advocates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/toronto-winter-plan-met-with-disappointment-from-housing-advocates\/","title":{"rendered":"Toronto winter plan met with disappointment from housing advocates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Housing advocates said\u00a0<\/span>the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/community-people\/housing-shelter\/homeless-help\/winter-services-plan-for-people-experiencing-homelessness\/\">Toronto winter plan<\/a> to help the city's unhoused population falls short of addressing fundamental needs as the months get colder.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The City of Toronto released the plan on Nov. 7 through a media press release.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=c20yDJGNi2A\"> live video<\/a> was initially scheduled by the city regarding the updates, but it was made private and unavailable to the public.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The plan expects to introduce changes to try and help more than 8,000 of the city\u2019s unhoused population.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This includes <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">230 more shelter spaces and about 1000 additional shelter spaces.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The plan states that the city\u2019s street to homes program will introduce more 24\/7 outreach teams for wellness checks to encourage those living outdoors to seek shelter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Further, <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">60 warming centres will operate during extreme weather conditions, which is down by four last year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, the city will continue to scale back on the number of temporary shelters, which includes the decommissioning of the Novotel at the 45 Esplanade by the end of 2022.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Plans to decommission all temporary shelters are supposed to be completed by the spring of 2023.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Also, space between beds will be reduced from two metres to 1.25 metres to accommodate the extra beds for shelters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This fall, advocate groups, like the Shelter and Housing Justice Network, report that dozens of individuals are turned away from shelter each night - they say that there should be 2700 spaces to start instead of the 1000 the city proposes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The spike in COVID-19 cases is also causing worry. Photo courtesy of the Voices of the Novotel Twitter account.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Advocates asked for a meeting Tory, but their request was denied.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Despite the limit on the number of individuals allowed into city hall, advocates and supports gathered at the Homeless Memorial outside the Church of the Holy Trinity.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There were 12 names added to the memorial.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Another rally is planned for next week to support the evicted residents of the Novotel at 45 Esplanade and at the temporary shelter on Bond St. The Novotel's decommissioning is expected to be completed by the end of the year, but residents were evicted starting on Oct. 12, when the city announced plans for its closure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The rally will be held at David Crombie Park on Nov.15.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Twitter account, Voices of the Novotel, sent CJRU a press release for the rally.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The press release states that advocates continue to call Gord Tanner to reconsider decommissioning the shelters, and that more spaces and health considerations are required to house individuals before the winter months.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tanner is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the general manager of the city's shelter, support and housing administration division.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">More details to come.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Listen to CJRU's coverage of the response to Toronto's winter plan:<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Housing advocates said\u00a0the Toronto winter plan to help the city&#8217;s unhoused population falls short of addressing fundamental needs as the months get colder.
