{"id":125926,"date":"2022-11-09T09:48:49","date_gmt":"2022-11-09T14:48:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=125926"},"modified":"2022-11-09T14:42:01","modified_gmt":"2022-11-09T19:42:01","slug":"a-radio-theatre-production-inspired-by-a-concussion-and-kingston-parks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/a-radio-theatre-production-inspired-by-a-concussion-and-kingston-parks\/","title":{"rendered":"Radio theatre production inspired by a concussion and Kingston parks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Editor's Note: Karim Mosna works at CFRC.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Last week <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfrc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CFRC 101.9 FM<\/a> in Kingston presented the <a href=\"https:\/\/podcast.cfrc.ca\/shortwave-theatre-festival\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shortwave Theatre Festival<\/a>, a series of original shows from Kingston-affiliated playwrights, directors, sound designers and actors.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One of the shows was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/podcast.cfrc.ca\/2022\/11\/half-past-lunchtime\/?fbclid=IwAR0PCyxVZpxcF5Ka0_Jow5P6xk4TBXRRYTFOltr292bSl4ClWu7XXy8wCJo\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Half Past Lunchtime<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> by Haley Sarfeld. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Half Past Lunchtime <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">is told from the point of view of a feline flaneur who meets a forager, a full-time worker, a concussed daydreamer, a robin, a widow and cucumber beetles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAll the characters are dealing with a lot of grief from isolation or a brain injury, and the disability it creates, and from widowhood or even the grief of gardening and there\u2019s bugs all over plants. I just wanted to see when people bump up against each other in those moments of grieving and kind of have some relief from it,\u201d says Sarfeld.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sarfeld credits her neighbourhood located near Friendship Park, and Belle Park as sources of inspiration for the strong nature component of the production.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI\u2019ve lived in this neigbourhood and around it for a few years, there\u2019s a lot of gardening, a lot of food sharing\u2026really free veggie markets happen in this neighbourhood and there\u2019s a really strong sense of connection in that community, and we\u2019re near Belle Park\u2026there was a bioblitz where people collect data to show much life there is in places under threat by developers,\u201d says Sarfeld.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She also cites another local park\u2019s Facebook group as an inspiration.<\/span><\/p>\n<!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('audio');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-125926-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Sarfeld-Clip.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Sarfeld-Clip.mp3\">https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Sarfeld-Clip.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sarfeld composed the music, sang, played the guitar, piano, melodica, egg shakers and a yogurt container tambourine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis was my first time really having to perform everything by myself\u2026. I actually can play these instruments.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The first song she composed came from her experience of suffering a concussion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThere\u2019s a line in the song Strawberry brain which is the first song I wrote after having a concussion\u2026when I was initially experiencing concussion symptoms, part of me was thinking this is such good creative fodder, but I am mentally, emotionally and physically broken\u2026 I was writing these little lines, I have a strawberry brain, my brain\u2019s like a bruised strawberry,\u201d says Sarfeld.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She adds the concussion was a source of humility to the universe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI was very much a person that relied on my ability to think quickly and speak quickly\u2026.There were moments going through the time that I was disabled by my concussion where I had to figure out how to value myself just as a thing that is alive and in a capacity beyond what I could provide or who could find me impressive or even my connection to music and writing was really stilted so I had to just appreciate being a living organism on the planet maybe that\u2019s also part of a connection to nature like I really got this deep sense of being part of everything like a strawberry or bug or cucumber is, and letting go of the need to be smart or able,\u201d says Sarfeld.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sarfeld says the production feels very similar to preserving food.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt was more than a year long process where you\u2019re gathering up music, writing these lines, it was all recorded by June, shortly thereafter I had sent in the files for the music, and then I didn\u2019t see it again, it was like pickles\u2026I sent it off to the sound designer to fill the jars\u2026it was this long process that fermented\u2026became itself and it\u2019s kind of neat tuning into the radio, or podcast, it\u2019s like a preserved moment\u201d says Sarfeld.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Listen to the full CFRC interview with Haley Sarfeld Below:<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Editor&#8217;s Note: Karim Mosna works at CFRC.\u00a0 Last week CFRC 101.9 FM in Kingston presented the Shortwave Theatre Festival, a series of original shows from Kingston-affiliated playwrights, directors, sound designers and actors.
