{"id":122875,"date":"2022-10-31T14:27:02","date_gmt":"2022-10-31T18:27:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=122875"},"modified":"2022-10-31T16:54:35","modified_gmt":"2022-10-31T20:54:35","slug":"citys-housing-crisis-affordability-remain-at-forefront-for-ward-11s-new-councillor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/citys-housing-crisis-affordability-remain-at-forefront-for-ward-11s-new-councillor\/","title":{"rendered":"City&#8217;s housing crisis, affordability remain at forefront for Ward 11&#8217;s new councillor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toronto\u2019s city clerk certified the election results on Oct. 27, confirming the winners of the Toronto municipal election held on Oct.24.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In what was the closest race to watch, former environmental commissioner of Ontario Dianne Saxe narrowly won Ward 11 University-Rosedale by 130 votes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier during election night, Norm Di Pasquale, who also held a small lead, was named the winner initially by some media outlets - but the lead gradually slipped as the night progressed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the Ward 11 elect, Saxe and the other seven new city councillors will be officially sworn in on Nov. 15.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part of Saxe\u2019s election platform was finding solutions for Toronto\u2019s housing crisis of supply and affordability\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s an ongoing issue that Saxe inherits from her predecessor, longtime Councillor Mike Layton.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\"We are in the middle of a housing emergency,\" Layton said in an online meeting earlier this year. \"Inclusionary zoning has been discussed as a significant potential to help alleviate some of the strains on our housing crisis - it's not a silver bullet by any means. Governments will still need to bring affordability to those that need it.\"<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of Layton\u2019s last efforts to help remedy the housing crisis was spearheading legislation that allocates 10 per cent of new developments as affordable housing, which would increase to 22 per cent by 2030.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was in response to Toronto\u2019s continued rise in rent, the threat of renovictions and months after tent encampment clearings were met with deep criticism from the public.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_124321\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-124321\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-124321\" src=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Mike-Layton-tweet-on-Dianne-Saxe-win-500x278.png\" alt=\"A small photo on the left of a person.
