{"id":120689,"date":"2022-10-11T09:47:43","date_gmt":"2022-10-11T13:47:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=120689"},"modified":"2022-10-11T14:47:27","modified_gmt":"2022-10-11T18:47:27","slug":"celebrating-a-century-of-campus-radio-in-kingston","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/celebrating-a-century-of-campus-radio-in-kingston\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating a century of campus radio in Kingston"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Oct. 7, 1922, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfrc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CFRC Radio<\/a> at Queen's University first took to the airwaves. 100 years later, a centennial plaque was unveiled outside the CFRC studios to commemorate the station's legacy. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mayor Bryan Paterson, MPP Ted Hsu, Queen's Principal Patrick Deane and Executive Director of the Community Radio Fund Canada Alex Freedman were at the ceremony and shared their thoughts on the value of the station.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is a part of the community, it is run by people from the community\u2026these are the voices from the community,\" says Freedman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\"Campus radio is the first place that you hear those early Canadian artists\u2026Shelagh Rogers started on this radio station. This is the place where those original voices get a microphone in front of them,\" he adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Former station manager Steve Cutway presented two achievement awards to long-standing volunteers <a href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/canadas-longest-running-campus-radio-station-honours-long-standing-volunteers-as-it-celebrates-100-years-of-broadcasting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wayne Vermette<\/a> and Jim Birch recognizing their over 40 consecutive years of broadcasting.<\/p>\n<p>\"I love radio, it's got me through so much...It's a very emotional day. I love CFRC, may it be here another hundred years,\" says Birch.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Freedman says while larger broadcasting companies with more subsidies and advertising may come and go, campus broadcasters are truly on the ground in the community.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThese are the people who live in the community, these are the people who live and die by what goes out over that signal, and that\u2019s pretty special,\u201d says Freedman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Freedman adds stations like CFRC are on the frontline in the fight for democracy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe live in an age of disinformation\u2026there\u2019s no question that the frontline against disinformation is local news, local media, local voice.
