{"id":120140,"date":"2022-10-06T11:48:20","date_gmt":"2022-10-06T15:48:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=120140"},"modified":"2022-11-17T09:42:16","modified_gmt":"2022-11-17T14:42:16","slug":"petition-asks-the-city-of-kingston-to-stop-an-encampment-eviction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/petition-asks-the-city-of-kingston-to-stop-an-encampment-eviction\/","title":{"rendered":"Petition asks the City of Kingston to stop an encampment eviction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a petition with close to 700 signatures asking the City of Kingston to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/stop-the-planned-encampment-evictions-at-ich?utm_source=share_petition&amp;utm_medium=custom_url&amp;recruited_by_id=45498491-3d99-11ed-9337-43cae349f06d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> stop the planned encampment evictions<\/a> at Belle Park next to the Integrated Care Hub (ICH). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The petition was started by <a href=\"https:\/\/mutualaidkatarokwi.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mutual Aid Katarokwi-Kingston<\/a>, a group that supports unhoused residents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clara Langley, a member of the Mutual Aid Katarokwi-Kingston, says the fear of evictions are very real. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhile we don\u2019t have an inside scoop of a planned eviction on the part of the city, the history suggests because they\u2019ve done larger evictions in the fall time, that one may be imminent\u2026They\u2019ve reenacted the encampment protocol, different parks around the city and smaller encampments there have already been evicted, there\u2019s some grounds for it to happen here,\u201d says Langley.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She adds that an eviction would be a matter of life and death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re in the midst of a drug poisoning crisis, the ICH has had a part in reversing over 600 opioid overdoses\u2026We know the effect of eviction is to disperse people and push them further into the woods for shelter, this drives them away from life-saving services. It\u2019s almost certain deaths would be a result of an eviction,\u201d says Langley.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resident Lacey McNeil has lived in the encampment for close to a year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re all just trying to survive really, the hub helps us with our necessities like our food and water. We wouldn\u2019t have it otherwise, we have our showers here, medical assistance here,\" says McNeil.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McNeil says she fears there will be nowhere to go.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re going to be pushed out of here\u2026There\u2019s not enough beds in the shelter, here there\u2019s 150 people and maybe 50 beds\u2026They proposed a lot of help, but nothing has come through, a lot of promises and empty ones at that\u2026everything the city promised to help us with\u2026all that the hub is providing for us since the city hasn\u2019t,\u201d says McNeil.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The petition includes a letter signed by 58 residents. It talks about the support and safety that has been created at the encampment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The City will say there are shelter beds and other housing options. These beds and options do NOT meet our needs! Some of us cannot be in these options because we have pets, because we have been banned, or because we find shelter rules really restrictive. None of these options have the community and support we've created for ourselves, or the safety of ICH.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mutual Aid Katarowki-Kingston is also asking the city for more information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCouncil also refers often to a by-names list of people who are experiencing homelessness or need housing supports and they use this list to suggest with the increases there will be sufficient spaces for everyone, but the number of people who are on that list is not available to the public, we want to know why that\u2019s not available to the public and whether the amount of people on that list has changed,\u201d says Langley.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She adds the city has a responsibility to provide alternative options that meet people\u2019s needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe available options are insufficient because they aren\u2019t accessible or they have barriers to accessing them,\u201d says Langley.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Integrated Care Hub is located within District 11. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">District 11 Coun.
