{"id":116740,"date":"2022-09-19T14:16:55","date_gmt":"2022-09-19T18:16:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=116740"},"modified":"2022-09-20T13:40:19","modified_gmt":"2022-09-20T17:40:19","slug":"smithers-community-centre-17-year-saga-continues-without-government-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/smithers-community-centre-17-year-saga-continues-without-government-funding\/","title":{"rendered":"Smithers community centre&#8217;s 17-year saga continues without government funding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Town of Smithers, the Smithers public library and the Smithers art gallery have been collaborating to address the need for a larger, more up-to-date community centre for Smithereens. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The proposed project is a multi-million dollar community centre, which requires government funding to make it happen. Recently, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithers.ca\/news-notices\/news-release-2022-10-smithers-library-and-art-gallery-project-update\">press release acknowledged that while there is a need for a new building, the art gallery has pulled out from the current plans, stating they are satisfied with their space<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This project started 17 years ago. Then 10 years ago, the Smithers art gallery joined into a partnership with the library and town to vie to build a community space that better reflects the needs of the community of Smithers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Now that\u2019s changed and the library board and town have to decide: do they move ahead without a new partner? Also, the project applied for funding with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Library\/ Gallery Project - BC\/Canada \u2013 Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) $7,737,500,\u00a0 but in August 2021 that funding<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was denied.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Private funders have made matching funds investments, but without government support, the project is on hold once again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To library liaison Wally Bergen, it\u2019s just another step in a nearly two decades long process to bettering the experience of \u201clibrary people\u201d in the Bulkley Valley.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nicole Chernish is the gallery director for Smithers Art Gallery and she is addressing the needs of the gallery and how they chose to remove themselves from this project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Listen to the full episode in the link below to hear from Nicole Chernish, Wally Bergen and town Mayor Gladys Atrill:<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Town of Smithers, the Smithers public library and the Smithers art gallery have been collaborating to address the need for a larger, more up-to-date community centre for Smithereens.
