Thanks to the enduring Vogue Cinema and the decades-long-running Sackville Film Society, Sackvillians have a fair amount of selection for watching films on the big screen. And now, with the birth of the Sackville Cinematheque, that selection is about to get even wider.<\/p>\n<p>The Cinematheque\u2019s founder stopped by CHMA studios to talk about the project and its inaugural season which launches tonight at the Owens Art Gallery:<\/p>\n<!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('audio');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-116392-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/CHMA-Sep-16-Cinematheque.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/CHMA-Sep-16-Cinematheque.mp3\">https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/CHMA-Sep-16-Cinematheque.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p>Founder and programmer Dino Koutros says the Cinematheque is built on a repertory cinema model.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere used to be cinemas dedicated to effectively older titles, classic films, cult films, unconventional genre films, Avant Garde even, sometimes,\u201d says Koutros, who grew up in a town that has two repertory cinemas, stoking what would become a lifelong passion. \u201cI was kind of lucky to have had that experience,\u201d he says. \u201cThat\u2019s where I really got engaged in film.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Koutros went on to become a film scholar, and soon after moving to Sackville with his family in 2018, started to plan what would become the Cinematheque.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to start something like the Cinematheque almost as soon as I got here,\u201d says Koutros, \u201cbecause I noticed there is a great film culture here actually.\u201d Koutros also noticed a gap. \u201cThere wasn\u2019t any group screening older titles,\u201d says Koutros, and so he decided to create something that could bring in films \u201cdrawing from the rich history of cinema.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With this inaugural season of the Cinematheque, Koutros is screening four films which he hopes will showcase the diversity of films he hopes to program as the series grows.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight\u2019s event features a screening of Buster Keaton\u2019s Sherlock Junior, a \u201ckind of action comedy, highly revered by cinephiles,\u201d says Koutros. Then in October he\u2019s screening cult classic \u201cThe Warriors\u201d set in 1970s New York, \u201cedge-of-your-seat kind of cinema.\u201d Following that in November will be Days of Heaven, \u201cone of the most strikingly shot films ever made,\u201d says Koutros. And then to finish off the season in December, an old martial arts film from 1967, \u201cDragon Inn\u201d. \u201cOne can\u2019t imagine The Matrix,\u201d says Koutros, \u201cwithout this film to influence it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Koutros is mixing it up with venues for this first season, moving from the Owens to Struts Gallery, the Crabtree Auditorium, and the Purdy Crawford Centre. Though he says he\u2019d be delighted to host screenings at the Vogue Cinema, he says he\u2019s working on building up on audience before taking the Cinematheque to the larger venue.<\/p>\n<p>Screenings will also be free, or by donation, this season.
