{"id":114457,"date":"2022-09-06T14:00:49","date_gmt":"2022-09-06T18:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=114457"},"modified":"2022-09-06T15:53:55","modified_gmt":"2022-09-06T19:53:55","slug":"4-8-million-in-new-project-grants-will-help-dalhousie-researchers-battle-brain-cancer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/4-8-million-in-new-project-grants-will-help-dalhousie-researchers-battle-brain-cancer\/","title":{"rendered":"$4.8 million in new project grants will help Dalhousie researchers battle brain cancer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Finding more effective ways to treat cancer tumours by a new focused ultrasound technique, Dalhousie University researchers are set to pursue\u00a0ground-breaking\u00a0health innovations with $4.8 million in new project grants from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cihr-irsc.gc.ca\/e\/193.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>CIHR Project Grant funding supports studies with the greatest potential to advance fundamental and applied research, and the health outcomes of Canadians.<\/p>\n<p>The university's research team will be receiving $700,000 over a span of five years.<\/p>\n<p>Dalhousie University Professor Dr. Jeremy Brown, from the school of biomedical engineering, said the funding will be going towards students and research staff to conduct a preclinical study on a brain cancer model, as well as covering salaries and ultrasound scanning costs.<\/p>\n<p>Brown's research program is focused on developing new ultrasound technologies as well as ultrasound therapy technologies with a target to obliterate tumours.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_114535\" style=\"width: 281px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-114535\" class=\" wp-image-114535\" src=\"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Screen-Shot-2022-09-06-at-1.39.00-PM-384x500.png\" alt=\"Portrait of a man in a black blazer looking at the camera. Photo contributed.<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\"This is a kind of new technology where you can essentially obliterate tissue with an ultrasound pulse. Essentially, you convert it into gas bubbles just by applying enough focused pressure on a point and so the tissue turns into gas bubbles, and then when it collapses, it just turns into tissue fragments. And so this is a very new type of tissue ablation,\"\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>- Dr. Jeremy Brown<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The benefits of this process are that it requires no heating of the tissue, and initiates a positive immune system response.<\/p>\n<p>Brown explained that all tumour ablation technologies, such as radiation,\u00a0RF\u00a0ablation, and mechanical scalpel resections initiate some immune response from the body where it recognizes the tumour and wants to attack.<\/p>\n<p>\"The brain\u00a0tumour\u00a0that we're targeting is glioblastoma, a type of cancer that's universally fatal. The standard of care is to go in, resect the\u00a0tumour\u00a0and the surgeon will surgically remove it the best they can. Then follow up that treatment with something like chemotherapy or radiation, but 100% of the time the\u00a0tumour\u00a0comes back.\"<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/glioblastoma\/cdc-20350148#:~:text=Glioblastoma%20is%20an%20aggressive%20type%20of%20cancer%20that%20can%20occur,%2C%20nausea%2C%20vomiting%20and%20seizures.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Glioblastoma<\/a> is a malignant, deadly, aggressive and fast type of cancer that affects the brain or spine. It requires treatment and surgery after a week of being discovered in a patient, according to Brown. It is also prominent among children and younger adults.<\/p>\n<p>\"The technology we're developing is still a surgical approach. So you would go in and still surgically remove the tumour.
