{"id":113067,"date":"2022-08-26T09:49:06","date_gmt":"2022-08-26T13:49:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=113067"},"modified":"2022-08-26T09:49:06","modified_gmt":"2022-08-26T13:49:06","slug":"march-in-kingston-to-raise-funds-for-an-incurable-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/march-in-kingston-to-raise-funds-for-an-incurable-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"March in Kingston to raise funds for an incurable disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The 4th annual <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/support.myeloma.ca\/site\/TR\/MultipleMyelomaMarch\/MMM2018?pg=entry&amp;fr_id=1397\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Multiple Myeloma March<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to raise awareness, funding for research and access to treatments is happening on Sunday September 11th at Victoria Park in Kingston.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Myeloma is an incurable disease and is the second most common form of blood cancer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hematologist with Kingston Health Sciences Centre, and Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at Queen\u2019s University, Dr. Troy Climans<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0says multiple myeloma can cause anemia, damage to the bone, kidney failure and high calcium levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\"People only used to live a couple of years with this disease, now patients are able to live with this 10 years or more based on a number of new treatments that have come within the last 10 to 15 years,\" says Dr. Climans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Climans says the first step in treating a patient with multiple myeloma is determining whether they would be eligible for a stem cell transplant. He adds in Kingston, 60 to 70 autologous stem <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">cell transplants are done per year, with the majority for multiple myeloma.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some patients are not eligible for stem cell transplants.
