{"id":112041,"date":"2022-08-23T17:11:47","date_gmt":"2022-08-23T21:11:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/?p=112041"},"modified":"2022-08-23T17:11:47","modified_gmt":"2022-08-23T21:11:47","slug":"sandcastle-day-competition-returns-after-two-year-hiatus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canada-info.ca\/en\/sandcastle-day-competition-returns-after-two-year-hiatus\/","title":{"rendered":"Sandcastle Day competition returns after two year hiatus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A sculpture competition will return to the low tides of Smelt Bay this week: Sandcastle Day is set for\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Saturday, Aug. 27. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The annual event has been held on the Cortes Island beach for around 20 years, but it has been on hold the last few summers due to the COVID-19 pandemic. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the past, the Cortes Island Senior Society has hosted the event.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Carole Thacker is volunteering to make it happen for the first time since 2019. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe seniors have always sponsored it\u2026But it hasn't happened for three years because \u2026(it) was canceled,\u201d Thacker explained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Scheduling the event is also tricky because the lunar calendar must align with a morning competition slot in the cooler exposed weather. The community organizer shared more on the tidal rhythms of the day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe tides have to be right so that we have sand around the corner in smelt bay,\" Thacker said. \"So the tides have to be low in the morning.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The event is family friendly and all are encouraged to register with a team or solo. There is no fee to register. Registration is at 10 a.m. at the Smelt Bay Provincial Park, beach parking area. There will also be food vendors at that location. The sculptures are created between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., and there is a one hour break before the awards are given at 2 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0There are four categories for prizes:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Structures and Castles<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sea Critters<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dragons and Monsters\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cOther\u201d (Open category)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Thacker doesn't suggest bringing dogs, and reminds the public that they must be on leash if dogs are present.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cDogs come, but we discourage it... They have to be on a leash.
